Facebook Koobface Virus: How to Protect Your Computer and Clean the Virus

Be Wary of Obscure Video Links from Your Friends, They Contain Viruses!

The Facebook Koobface virus is a malicious worm that has been spreading fast throughout the popular social networking site. Thousands of people around the world have been receiving obscure video links from people they haven't met before. This Facebook virus has already attacked MySpace and has decided to target other websites.

You might have received a message containing a video link from your own friend, who might not be aware that the link takes you to a flash update download that is actually a corrupted file that will steal highly sensitive information off your hard drive - including addresses and credit card information.

Protect Yourself

Only a couple of days ago, I was unfortunate to have received a message from one of my friends to watch a "cool video" about me. Although I was confused, I trusted my friend and decided to open the link; prompting the Adobe flash update download 'required' to watch the movie. I had no idea it was the infamous Facebook virus that has been sweeping the internet.

As soon as I completed the download, I received a high alert notification from my Windows Defender antivirus program on the bottom right hand corner of my screen. Seconds later, my Firefox browser instantly closes due to an unknown error, spiking up my heart rate. I've been using computers since I was eleven years old and I was experienced in handling internet worms and malicious viruses.

Without risking another minute, I opened my Windows Defender antivirus program and performed a quick scan of my computer to locate the virus. It didn't take long for the Facebook virus to be detected on my computer. I removed all the file contents, closed every program, and utilized a System Restore to return my computer's registry to a past date when it was virus-free.

I was lucky to have gotten rid of the Facebook virus before it permanently damaged my computer and stole sensitive information. I also made sure to notify all my Facebook friends through a mass message so no one had to go through my painful ordeal.

Scan your computers with multiple antivirus programs, be vigilant, and warn your friends about the Koobface virus.

  • System Restore can effectively revert your computer to a previous safer state.
  • Scan your computer with multiple anti-virus programs if you get infected.
  • Remember to warn your friends about the virus before their computers are also attacked.
The Facebook Koobface virus has attacked other sites before Facebook, such as MySpace. Although you receive corrupted video links from your friends, do not click on them because it contains a malicious worm code designed to steal sensitive information.

What a lousy article. It doesn't give any real advice for protecting your computer and removing Koobface like the title says.

Oh, no! I hope I didn't send a virus link to anyone. The last time I forward a link to a video was probably sometime in November. Thanks for this article. Good work!

Thanks as well. I had heard about this on the radio but there was no info on what to look out for. Is the virus sent as an email btw?
