Facebook Makes More Changes; I'm Very Glad I'm Not Part of It

Facial Recognition for Photo Tagging; Selling Your Posts to Advertisers

R.C. Johnson
I have expressed this in a previous article, but I'll repeat it here - I am very happy that I never joined Facebook! This is one site that seems to continually make changes to its software that affect current users, but, as far as I know, the users cannot remove their photos and information from the site even if they wish to do so.

Two cases in point:

1) In December, Facebook rolled out their new feature called Tag Suggestions. Whenever you're offered the chance to tag groups of your friends in an album, Facebook will utilize its facial recognition technology to group similar faces together and automatically suggest the friend you should tag them with.

Users can opt out of Tag Suggestions by going to their privacy settings and disabling the "Suggest photos of me to friends" feature. Call me silly if you like, but just knowing that such a huge site with bazillions of photos has the technology to employ facial recognition somehow gives me the willies.

2) Have you been clicking the Like button? Now Facebook is selling your posts to advertisers. They call it Sponsored Stories. Advertisers call it a godsend. Facebook sells your activity -- your likes, your words and data about the places you visit as advertisements your friends see.

Advertisers that don't want to take the chance of having negative sponsored stories pop up about them can buy only "likes," not all content.

Facebook has been in testing for three months and is launching with Coca-Cola, Levis and Unicef.

This also gives me the willies.

These changes by Facebook are my two most recent reasons for being happy about not being a part of the Facebook social networking site, which I do not trust. For other reasons that I listed before, see:

It keeps getting worse and worse. I go days now without even thinking of checking it. It used to be several times a day. They want me to enter more information, like where I work, at the top of my profile. Uh, no thanks. I can't believe the personal things people share on there...even their cell phone number for all to see.

What really gets me steamed is them selling our activity on Facebook. I don't care how easy or hard it might be come up with clever little quips, when someone creates their comments it is their intellectual property. I'm sure Facebook has it legally covered in their membership agreement, but it's still morally wrong.

I'm on Facebook but I'm careful with what I post. Thanks for reaffirming my behavior.
