Such is the case today. It starts with one person in my office saying, "Hey, I can't get to Facebook." Which then leads to several trying repeatedly via phones, computers, etc. Others try pinging www.facebook.com. Ok, yeah, I tried it too, and it timed out. (Timed out -- that's geek speak for a website that's not responding.)
Sure enough, it appears that Facebook is having some issues. After doing some news story searches, I came across a website called DownRightNow that actually monitors and tracks the uptime of such social services as Facebook, Twitter, and Ning. They also handle and monitor Email Services such as Google, Windows Live Hotmail and Yahoo's mail. On their main page can be seen a green checkmark next to a site (which means all is well) or some other indicator such as a yellow triangle (Possible Service Trouble) and a red circle which shows (Likely Service Disruption). Know what Facebook's status shows? Red circle. Not good.
For some great additional detail you can click on the "Details" button and a Status History appears. From this particular page you can view a very convenient 24-hour graph that shows whether a particular service is up or down. In Facebook's case, according to the graph, they've had some sort of widespread service disruption for at least the last two hours.
That is certainly going to lead to a lot of frustrated FB users out there.
So hang on. As someone who works on servers and networks, there are certainly a whole lot of busy and/or frustrated folks right now. It's bound to be back. So in the meantime, to see what kind of trouble that Facebook might be experiencing, visit the DownRightNow website to learn more.
