Facebook: How to Post Articles Properly for Branding

Make Sure Facebook's Share Applet Gives Proper Credit!

Donald Pennington
Promoting on Facebook is easy, fun, and free. Even with your best work, any writer will also need credit for their name, along with their words. Being a writer, getting credit alongside your work isn't just "fair," it's crucial.

Sometimes share applets place our links onto social networking sites like Facebook in an odd, "wonky," or otherwise undesirable manner. But not to worry: They can often, and should be, edited! Not only can posters oftentimes have a bit of control over their own branding...they get to give credit for their sources in debates and discussions.

But most folks reading this are wanting to understand the tiniest of points about promoting their art. For you who read this piece it's likely, being given credit, can be a big deal. We eat our readership each month. We fill our gas tanks with readers sometimes too. Make sure your name is being shared!

Disclaimer: Some links, for reasons beyond the understanding of the author, aren't able to be edited in the following steps. It's still a good idea to attempt to control how much exposure your name gets along with your work.

Facebook: How To Post articles Properly For Branding Step 1:

Highlight and select the entire url you wish to share on fb. Make it a point to highlight from the very first "h," to the very last character in within the url/address bar, of the title being shared. This assures what's known as "link integrity." It's a basic concept of all things computer/internet. Go ahead and do this even if you plan to use an applet, just in case, the applet malfunctions. Make certain to be on the correct page to be shared.

Facebook: How To Post articles Properly For Branding Step 2:

Either going through a share applet, or by posting directly onto a wall, (simply right-click, select "paste," when going directly onto the wall. Most of us know this much already but just in case), when placing a link, an enhancement also comes up offering a preview of the link being shared. This is another decision point when sharing via Facebook.

What I'm terming an "enhancement" is exactly the same thing you usually see when using a share applet on fb.

Facebook: How To Post articles Properly For Branding Step 3a:

If the wish is to just place a link as text alone, without the enhancement, close the enhancement/preview pane out just by clicking the "x" in the preview's upper right-hand corner. Next click "share," and you're done! Others might want to understand the finer points of using the preview window for branding. Those folks, follow me to:

With the preview pane/enhancement open, and before you click "share," place your name into the tag-line/title to get proper credit.

Highlight the title line being assigned to the link being posted. It should "open up" into an editable field. This is from whence you shall be making the first of some possible changes.

Facebook: How To Post articles Properly For Branding Step 4a:

Besides the title to the link being posted itself, remove that text, that isn't wanted. A simple matter of "highlight & delete." Simple, huh? Next, type in what you do want! Consider the following example:

"(Title)" by (writer's name) on (publishing website)

Occasionally, submissions can also have an editable description field under the title/tag line. Mere highlighting and re-typing can edit this, if needed/desired. Sometimes the description is exactly what's needed and it's just the author's name needs to be credited. But this particular point is still good to know.

Facebook: How To Post articles Properly For Branding Step 5:

Close out the individual text fields by clicking anywhere within the preview/enhancement box, but for the text field itself. From this point the final "product," with the new tag line/title and/or description, for all the fb world to see! Now, all that's needed is, to click share like any other link being posted.

It's not about bolding the URL. This piece is only about editing the post itself to make sure your name's included.

Thanks for this, I took your advice about bolding text in the article, never thought about bolding the url when posting it.
