Facebook: the Reason Why You Didn't Get the Job?

Is Facebook a Good or Bad Networking Deviant

Zach Golt
Facebook is the best networking tool available to college students. It allows easy networking and helps you keep in touch with friends from elementary school, high school, college and work. But Facebook gives you the option of putting your full first and last name, your current job location, pictures your friends tagged of you, and your current status. Wait a second, "pictures your friends tagged of you?" This phrase is deathly. For instance, lets say you just graduated from college and its now time to look for a job. The preferences on your facebook liberally allow access to all parties that click on your name. Yes, all parties would include your future boss, well not just yet. When you turned in your resume he took the liberty to accessing his own facebook account and looking up your previous job experience because he thought it was a mistake because your interview went so well. The interview basically owned, and he was so impressed with your work ethic. As he types in your name he curiously clicks on your pictures, and as he is clicking he sees pictures of you at nationals, pictures a the inauguration, and then he sees a picture of you going crazy with your friends on game day (you might be completed smashed doing a funnel in handstand, or just a funnel). Once your boss sees these pictures his first impression of you changes because now he has a second impression of you from your Facebook. It is a good idea to treat Facebook as another you, except in web page format online. Facebook is a resume that lets people know what you like, who you are, and what you enjoy. If your lucky your boss will just see those pictures as a fun time in college, but some high-ups that mean serious business and want the crème of the crop won't want your other half, (wep page you) and he could decide not to call you back.

It is important that before you start applying for jobs to clean your facebook up. There is a time and place for everything, and it just happens to the time and place where a new chapter of your life is about to begin. Don't let a little can of beer wet the pages of the beginning of your new chapter.

I hope these tips were informative and stopped your boss from seeing and embarrassing picture of you. Good luck!

good piece. I just want to point out, however, that just because you have everything set to private does not mean people can't see it! There are third party application that will allow you to see any and all information on anyone's profile.

Good question Kristy, but there is actually no other setting that you can go on to view other Facebook pages unless you are added as a friend. Other Facebook setting could also allow you to see a limited view. This allows the user to chose at his or her discretion what they want shown publicly or privately if you are not added as a friend. I hope I was able to answer your question.

Thank you for your comment Kristy!

When I go on Facebook I can't see other people's information unless they add me as a friend. Is there some other setting that allows you to see info on everyone?
