Facebook Vs Myspace: It's a Personal Preference

A Comparison of Two Social Networking Sites

Beth Inman
First, I need to clarify one thing. I am not a techie geek. I know nothing about the inner workings of Myspace or Facebook. However, I am an avid user of both.

I have been using Myspace for about two years and have yet to find anything I do not like about it. Facebook on the other hand, has a few things I would change. Perhaps there are ways to change some of these things, and I welcome you to add a little note in the comment section below. I take direction and correction very well.

Pros and Cons According to Me:

Myspace allows for some pretty cool graphic backgrounds. Personal layouts allow you to add a really nice personal touch to your page. There are thousands of graphic layouts available for free download or you can create your own layout with favorite photos or artwork. Facebook on the other hand, is boring. I have not found anything available for dressing up your wall and honestly find the plain white page pretty blah.

Both Myspace and Facebook allow you to upload photos. This is a great way to share photos with friends and a good place to store photos as well. Both sites allow you to Tag a friend in a photo. Myspace is much more private, allowing only the person you tagged and their friends to view the photo. They can not look into the rest of the album. Facebook allows anyone that is a friend of the person you have tagged to look at the photo. It is posted on their wall and merely clicking on the picture will take a person to the picture. They can then continue to look at the entire album on your page. If there is a way to prevent this I would love to know about it. I am not keen on sharing private photos with everyone.

Facebook posts on your wall, all the comments and activity of your friends. Boy, this loads a page up quickly. I really could care less what a friend of a friend has to say about anything. No, I am not antisocial; I would just prefer to keep it simple. Myspace is much cleaner in that respect. Only comments to you are posted on your wall. If you want to know what your friends are talking about you can go look. I guess though, if you have a reason for wanting to know what someone is talking about this will work well for you.

All the applications; what is this all about? Barn Buddies, restaurants, stalker lists, fan clubs, smiles and hearts. Oh yes, and let us not forget the pillow fights and sending beers to each other. The application list on Facebook is overwhelming. Not a day goes by without a friend sending me an invitation to a new application. Stop already. If I ignore you, you will think I do not like you. If I accept the invitation, I have another application loading to my page and have to spend my time feeding cows and slapping my friends with pillows. This is all fun but seriously, enough is enough. Myspace does have applications as well. You can send drinks back and forth, race your cars, show the world where you have traveled and just how cool you are. You can even participate in Mafia Wars. Somehow, it just does not seem so in your face all the time.

Which do I like best? I am a diehard Myspace fan. I like the personalization aspect and it just seems much more private. Do I like Facebook? Yes I do, and in all honesty, I have more friends on Facebook!

Facebook for me. I ignore most applications and delete a lot of the noise from my wall.

I think it was all the gory backgrounds that people chose for themselves drove me away from MySpace, before I even had a chance to find its merits.

I'm not a member of either...guess I'm eschewing social networks ;-) Interesting review, Beth.

Yes, it is certainly ersonal preference - as it would be to choose to eschew 'social networks' entirely...

Great article, I always wondered the pros and cons of each of these.
