Facebook's Growing Literary/Arts Community and What it Has Done for Me

Alexandra Morgan
I must admit that I was a late comer to the whole Facebook craze, I resisted until modern times dragged me into her sticky web. I'm a pretty old-fashioned gal at heart, still love records, listen to a discman (yeah, you heard that right, no MP3 player or ipod for me, least not yet), and didn't until the last 3 months have a Facebook page. Crazy I know, since as a freelance writer of 5 years I've spent countless hours on social media sites like Digg, Twitter, Newsvine and RawSugar. Yep, I had a Twitter account pronto, but no Facebook page to speak of.

I finally relented a few months ago after the umpteenth friend asked, "Are you on Facebook?"

After completing the mind-numbing task of putting up a passable profile and only what was essential, I found a few poet friends that I know in real life which in turn led to tons of new poet friends across the country and around the world, all of whom I probably never would have met if it weren't for this new fangled thing called Facebook (not so new anymore, I know, I know).

I really wasn't expecting much at the outset, but thank god for low expectations and those few rare people who manage to exceed your wildest dreams when you had the bar set so low that you forgot what quality and creativity really are.

To my welcome surprise, the last few months I've spent on good ol' FB have been some of the most productive and creative months for my poetry as well as my freelance writing. And for that, I gotta say a big thank you to the inspiring and prolific poets and artists on Facebook, you guys brighten each and every day for me.

Ironically, I came to find out that many of the poets and artists that I am now friends with online were right in my back yard all along, talk about 6 degrees of separation! Just goes to show that in this day and age you can't get by simply by showing up and bringing your sparkling personality to the room, you gotta have an online calling card to even RSVP to life.

Ok modern world, I hear you, I hear you, you can stop nagging now.

yeah, if you can get around the constant requests there is wonderful writing to be found.

Interesting take - FaceBook can be a boon that way, but you have to avoid getting sucked into all the mindless requests for smiles and cute dogs that seem to dominate.
