Facebook's Timeline Similar to Virtual, Online Scrap Booking

Do You Long to Integrate Your Work Life, Family Life, and Social Life?

The Game of Life

Milton Bradley/Hasbro has a toy game called the Game of Life. Their slogan is 'Where will your choices take you?" This will be alike a virtual scrap book.

Introducing the Facebook Timeline

On 9/22, at the 2011 F8 Convention in California, Zuckerberg introduced the Timeline. Out with pages, enter Timeline.

Zuckerberg explains Timeline this way

"It is a place where you can share the story of your life. You have a profile file and a cover picture - that is your introduction to the world - something that signifies who you are." Upload pictures off your phone or computer and then select priority codes so that not everything is featured or shared.

All posts and stories that you have entered into Facebook will be displayed chronologically in Facebook in just a few weeks.

Instead of having to scroll down and look for older updates on your friends profiles, it will be there in the social ticker. Posts will be shown based upon who you chat with and what apps they use that are similar. Showing similar or related info technology is called dynamic recognition engine.

Dynamic Recognition Abilities promote e-commerce

Utilizing GPS technology, e-commerce, social media networking and media integration (texting, phone, video call), plus user selections for privacy, Facebook users will be able to sort out their stories and pictures on a timeline and selectively share by group security levels. They can even edit their past.

For an individual this is great, if you want to use it. For businesses, it is a golden opportunity to develop web apps and connect with millions of Facebook users that might actually like or want your products.

Subscriber vs. Friend - what is the difference?

If you are a public figure, perhaps a school teacher that wants to limit her students' ability to see her posts, there is a big difference. Your friends can see just about everything. Your subscribers can only see public info. To better understand the difference between a friend, a subscriber, and an associate when you are done reading this, take a look at this article in the Huffington Post about subscription tips.

Connecting People with E-Commerce

The coolest things about the new Facebook changes are that users will be able to share video conferencing, movies, music, messaging, and voice calls simultaneously.

From a marketing perspective, the world has never been so tangible.

Some fear that the new Timeline change is a stalker's delight. Facebook has always had the desire to connect people, but 'Users might be surprised at what they see in their Timeline initially', says Zack Whittaker. He is projecting a mass exodus on the way.

My bet is on Zuckerberg.

I feel like Tom Hanks in "Big" ~ I don't get it. If I am chatting with a Facebook friend, why ever would I want to send them a FB message or text message or email all at the same time. The new format took away the ability to add a link when posting a status update.I found this out when I was unable to add a map to show where I lived in relation to a neighborhood lock down due to a shooting. Previously the image would have shown below my status update, making it quite easy for family and friends to see why I was posting about the local news.

I like the 'subscriber vs friend' idea....since so many of my ex-students (who are all older now) FB me. Nice work.
