How: This is done by inserting a tube called a cannula into a small incision and moving it back and forth while sucking the excess fat out by a vacuum. This procedure is done alone in young patients and in older patients it is often a piece of a larger package. For example: a face lift, eyebrow lift and nose surgery are done along with the facial liposuction.
Requirements: You must be healthy (no diseases or health complications), you must have a disproportionate amount of fat deposits in the face and your skin must have good elasticity. And of course last but not least: you must have the money to pay. This procedure by itself usually takes less than an hour and the cost varies greatly from $1500.00 to $3800.00.
What to expect: This is a same day treatment done with a local anesthetic (as long as the procedure is being done alone). You will have one or two small incisions in an inconspicuous location (along jaw or even in the mouth). If the incision is made in the mouth then you will have a change in diet for a few days as well as other requirements made by the doctor to minimize infection and maximize healing. You will have a few stitches in each incision.
This is a permanent procedure however a small follow up tweaking is sometimes still needed in a follow up procedure. Mild pain relievers are recommended for several days with an application of cold packs. 24 hours or more of rest is required (so plan to take a short vacation from work). Depression can sometimes follow the surgery and the healing period can be challenging and so you should be emotionally stable. Liposuction has been know to lead to death for some and to horror stories of lopsidedness in others. You must be sure to get a qualified surgeon who operates in a fully accredited facility. Most horror stories have to do with a large amount of fat being removed. Because this liposuction is done in the face there is less fat being removed however, discuss this and all other concerns with your potential surgeon. Visiting more than one facility may be wise. Ask around among friends and co-workers for facility and surgeon recommendations in your area. Proceed with caution and don't be afraid to ask surgeons if they will get you in contact with someone else to whom they have given this procedure.
