Facing Life's Problems as a Stay-at-Home Dad

What happens when mom wears the pants in the family and not dad? Women are taking the corporate world by storm and behind every good woman, there is a stay at home dad. Stay at home dads may have started out in the workforce and chose to stay at home or they could have lost a job and been forced into the position through no choice of their own. Being a stay at home dad is not an easy career choice - and yes, it is a career to care for the home, children and mom.

Illness Takes Dads by Storm

Moms have been fighting through sickness and illness since the beginning of time. When a stay at home dad falls ill, there may not be as much experience working through it to maintain a semi-normal household.

Tips: Do what you have to and leave the rest for later. Resting while children are at school is the best option. The house, clothes, laundry and cooking can take a back burner to getting better. Drink plenty of green tea and other fluids and seek medical attention if the illness seems like something more than just a cold.

Financial Issues Arise - It's My Fault

Stay at home dads may feel that he being out of work causes financial troubles. The shoe fits on both feet. Women can earn just as much money as men so financial troubles are a shared family problem. If money is tight, try seeking a part time job while children are at school to supplement income.

Tip: Many stay at home dads are choosing to work from home. There are freelance jobs that can earn some extra income and stay at home dads never have to leave the house.

I Must Go Back to Work - Obligations vs. Desires

Just as stay at home moms desire to work outside the home, so will stay at home dads. If dad is the primary caregiver and outside care is not an option, the family needs to sit down and talk through the problems and possible solutions. Dad needs to feel complete and if working outside the home provides that feeling, there needs to be a solution that makes everyone happy and works for the family financially.

Tip: With a rise in unemployment, home businesses are on the rise. It is no longer uncommon to find stay at home dads throwing Avon, Pampered Chef or other form of party to feel as though they are working and providing for the family.

There will be problems, fights, talks and emotional issues involved with being a stay at home dad. Women have plenty of experience in this field, so stay at home dads should seek out moms in the area to talk about concerns and personal issues. There are fewer stay at home dads than moms, but that is quickly changing so soon the park will be filled with just as many men as women - there is support out there.
