Facing Our Pain

Donna Cavanagh
We all feel physical pain
Pain is part of the human condition
We take pills and the hurt miraculously eases away
But the pain of the heart needs a gifted magician

When our hearts become hurt or wounded
It is an ache that defies all description
It is the fear of being lost and alone in the world
A pain for which there is no prescription

The best we can do is face the hurt
And let pain know that we will not be defeated
We will not crawl away or give into despair
We will not allow our lives to be destroyed or cheated

It is hard to stare down emotional pain
It takes a strength that cannot be measured
But when our hearts are healed and open to joy
Love again will be welcomed, embraced and treasured

A "healed heart" is still a scarred heart! Sometimes those scars still ache occasionally - like a wounded knee - oh, nevermind, Wounded Knee was a Massacre - so I guess that wasn't the best analogy. You know what I mean, cheers :)

I just love the line, "ITs hard to stare down pain". Amen to that. There is always such healing in your poetry Donna. Its like you knew we would need this message today and the Spirit guided your hands.

My daughter recently experienced this kind of pain. I am very proud of the way she has dealt with it and moved on. She' very emotionally healthy.
