The second part of its name already implies danger. In some people's minds the word "constrictor" is immediately associated with movie scenes of people getting - well, horribly constricted. In real life, it is not unheard of for a boa pet owner to become a boa constrictor's squeeze toy. The truth is, although there are definitely a lot of knowledgeable and dedicated boa pet owners, some owners may not exactly know what they're getting into or may know only theoretically what it's like to care for a boa.
In recent years, the debate over exotic pet legislation has been picking up speed. On one hand, there are those who advocate that exotic pets like the boa should be sent back to the wild where they belong. On the other hand, exotic pet owners argue that they are thoroughly capable of providing their pets with love and care.
Actual situations however, no matter how seemingly isolated, may effectively damage the cause of exotic pet owners. It has been determined that many who actually start caring for young pet boas actually become burdened by their charges and therefore leave them at the mercy of time and destructive parasites because no one else may want to take them. It's as if imagining yourself caring for a heavyweight pet seems fun at first when the pet is just a wee bit smaller than its adult size and then you later realize when your pet has grown larger than life that caring for it has become impossible.
When you're therefore considering getting a pet boa, understand that it should be for better of for worse. Understand that your pet boa will eventually grow to more or less ten feet and become as heavy as a sixth grader with an appetite to boot. Although boas do not eat everyday, when they do eat, they have to be fed with mice, rats, chickens or rabbits which are specially bought from pet stores to ensure that there are no harmful organisms or bacteria that may harm your boa. The boa's food alone may prove expensive for some.
Add to the food requirement the exact specifications for a boa's home away from home. It is unlikely that you would want your snake to have free reign over your small domain, so consider providing the proper abode for your pet. Not any place or container can be used for its home. A boa should have its own enclosure that's big enough for your pet to move around. Since a boa is actually quite huge, you can only imagine the enormity of its enclosure which should be made ideally out of glass and should have temperature regulation.
Cleaning a boa's abode is even more daunting than setting it up in the first place. Boa enclosures need to be constantly cleaned and monitored to ensure that your boa doesn't get sick. If you can manage cleaning hills of fecal matter then you may have just proven yourself a true and dedicated boa pet lover.
Remember that a boa is a living creature too. Before you even consider getting one for a pet, be sure that you are emotionally, financially and physically ready to care for a boa.
