What Do We Know About Events Since the Shooting?

When news broke that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords would be cleared to attend the Florida launch of the space shuttle Endeavour, the entire country smiled for her. The crew is led by her husband, Capt. Mark Kelly, and he has expressed the couple's strong desire to have her attend.

Officials in Florida were already bracing for massive crowds, as it will be the last launch for the retiring orbiter. President Obama has said he and his family will attend. It's not known yet if they will watch with Giffords.

Looking back to the tragedy in Tucson Jan. 8, what are some relevant facts?

* The attack killed six and wounded 13, including federal court Judge John Roll and Sept. 11, 2001,-born Christina Taylor-Green.

* Christina, who was 9, was honored with a special charity baseball game March 7 between the Arizona Diamond Backs and Chicago White Sox.

* The organ donation Christina's family made reportedly saved a child's life in Boston and helped others to see.

* Alleged shooter Jared Lee Loughner is undergoing psychological evaluations. A competency hearing has been set for May 25.

* Loughner is facing 49 counts, including murder and attempted murder, with more possible. He could face the death penalty.

* Ironically, Judge Roll, one of the deaths Loughner is charged with, declared a portion of the Brady Bill unconstitutional in 1994. The question centered around the requirement for background checks when purchasing guns.

* Since the beginning of 2011, 30 law enforcement professionals have been killed by hostile gunfire.

*As for Congresswoman Giffords, she continues to do remarkably well. On January 21 Giffords left the Tucson hospital she had been in since the shooting and began rehabilitation in the TIRR Memorial Hermann Memorial Rehabilitation Hospital in Houston.

* Just one month after being wounded, Giffords is reported to be speaking, even asking for toast at breakfast. Contrary to early reports, however, "toast" was not her first word spoken.

* Giffords used to be right-handed, now she is left-handed. Doctors must adjust rehabilitation so too much of what she does isn't taken over by her left side.

* The doctor in charge of her rehabilitation places her recovery in the top 5 percent of patients recovering from similar wounds.

* Her close personal friend and fellow U.S. representative, Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), is leading the charge to update gun control regulations.

* Daniel Hernandez, the 21-year-old intern who helped save Giffords' life by slowing her bleeding after the shooting, lost an election to become student government president at the University of Arizona.

* More than half a million people are expected to watch the launch of Endeavour, bringing an estimated $10-15 million to the area economy.

We also know that stories of great import don't have much of a shelf life on the 24 hour churn. Unless, that is, your name is Charlie Sheen. We know SO much more about this dickheaded wonder than we do about what really went on that day when Arizona was forced face to face with their right wing agenda to destroy America's progress forward.
