Factoid Friday

Bridget Ilene Delaney
It's Friday and that means that it is time for Factoid Friday! On Fridays, I'll provide you with five facts. This is simply because writers and readers seem to love trivia and learning! I know that I do, so five facts are a great amount to learn, hopefully new to you, things. The facts will be bold. My comments will be in plain text.

Seguin, TX was once the home of the world's largest pecan!

Okay, so it wasn't a real pecan, but a "statue" of a pecan. The world's largest pecan is now in Brunswick, Missouri and it is made of cement. The pecan that previously held the record is still in Seugin, TX and it is still the world's largest ceramic pecan. Seguin, TX is also the home of the world's largest mobile pecan! Of course, these are great pictures for tourists and Seguin is a wonderful scenic stop that is only 35 miles East of San Antonio!

An 1916, Mary the Elephant was hanged for committing murder.

Mary the Elephant is not a nickname. A real elephant, named Mary, was hanged in Erwin, Tennessee! The story constant changes why she was hanged. She may have killed a politician's daughter. She may have trampled her caretaker. No matter the exact details of why she was hanged, the hanging of Mary the Elephant is part of Erwin, Tennessee's folklore. I would imagine that it always makes a good story! I'm already imagining the hangings of other animals.

There is a restaurant with a totally blind staff.

That's pretty neat, a restaurant with a totally blind staff! Just how do they do that, though? Well, it's in Canada, but that doesn't explain much. The thing about the restaurant is that you dine completely in the dark. This is supposed to enhance your senses of smell and taste, being that you cannot see. The restaurant is called O.Noir.

Courtroom G in the Lake Charles Courthouse has a ghost!

At least, it is suspected that courtroom G has a ghost! People keep hearing moaning in Courtroom G in the Lake Charles courthouse when in courtroom G. They can only figure that it is a ghost.

People actually have thought that the nonsense words in "Welcome Christmas" in the cartoon special The Grinch that Stole Christmas are Latin words!

I am not sure how something that sounds somewhat like "yahoo door ays, wahoo door ays" is mistaken for Latin, however, people have actually asked for the Latin and the translations of the Latin for these words.

As far as the unfortunate elephant item goes, in the Middle Ages (and probably a bit beyond) bad dogs were treated the same way as bad people: they were hanged. That is where the phrase, "hang-dog expression" comes from.

An elephant was electrocuted on Coney Island for killing a man right around this same time.

It's Friday already? I'm trying to picture a tree with an elephant swinging from a branch. Did they put Mary on a horse?
