Pregnancy is one of the times that need a great deal of adjustments for women. Although there are many women who would go through pregnancy without many hitches, there are also a lot of women who experience difficulties during pregnancy. One of the many threats that women would often have to deal with during pregnancy is depression. There are many women in the United States who are suffering from depression during pregnancy that this matter needs to be looked into seriously.

According to experts, there are some factors that would increase the risk of a woman having depression during pregnancy. If you the woman have a history of depression, she would be very careful during pregnancy, as there is a big chance or recurrence of depression. The age of the woman and the time she had her pregnancy would also increase the risk of depression. Younger women are more prone to depression during pregnancy that older women. According to studies, older women are more stable and would tend to welcome pregnancy more than their younger counterparts.

The state of the marriage of the woman would greatly affect her disposition. When the marriage is on the rocks during her pregnancy, there is a big possibility that a woman would suffer from depression. If the woman would end up separating from her mate and living on her own while pregnant, such change could lead to emotional disturbances that may trigger depression

The impact of depression on Pregnancy:

Depression can make a pregnant woman forget to take care of herself. A lot of pregnant women who are depressed would not be able to follow the recommendations of their doctor on how to take care of their babies. In fact, she may not be eating or sleeping right that could cause harm on her baby.

There are women who would turn to alcohol and drugs when they feel depressed. As we all know, alcohol and drugs are bad for the baby. If the pregnant woman would abuse these substances, there is a big possibility for her to lose her baby. Furthermore, even if the woman would not really lose her baby because of alcohol or drug abuse, there is a big possibility that the baby will be born with congenital defects.

Coping with depression

. To cope with depression, a pregnant woman should try to seek support from family and friend. Family and friends could help a pregnant woman cope with the situation. Furthermore, if the depression becomes severe, it would be a good idea to seek of professional help. Never attempt to take over the counter medications or self medicate.
