What we need to do is first, open up to them and make sure that we provide a warm loving environment for them to experience. Be soft to the touch and soft in voice and action. You will need to be patient with your cat and make sure that he or she knows that you are not there to hurt it. You have to make sure that he or she is the one to come to you. Do not ever be forceful or make advancements to an abused cat. You have to let the cat be free and start to adjust to you on its own.
Be sure not to use any loud devices or make any sudden movements around abused cats. They may get startled and become even more frightened than they already are or they may just become lethargic and reclusive. Make sure that you refrain also from doing anything or using anything in a manner that might be startling to the animal, because you never know what may have happened in the past and what they are afraid of.
Cats that have become lethargic will not respond well. They will not eat or drink anything, or will do so very rarely. In order to be able overcome this, the best thing that you can do is to bring another cat in to play with , so that your cat can learn the skills of doing all these things over again, and begin to feel more comfortable. If the cat is repressed and conditioned, it wont be able to learn new things over again, except through its mothers care or by another cat.
Make sure that if you are dealing with an abused cat that you be as calm and collected as you can. Anything that will startle the cat could spell disaster or outburst. The last thing you want happening is to have the cat attack you or someone else. Always use a soft voice and be very gentle. By doing all of these things you should be able to heal your cats emotional state over time.
