You probably know that anti-depressants are given to people who are depressed. You also know that they prescribed by physicians and psychiatrists. But what else do you know about anti-depressants?

What do anti-depressants do?

They basically change the way the balance of the chemicals in the brain cells. Our brain has what is called neurotransmitters. When a person takes an anti-depressant that pill will help make these transmitters function more properly.

Anti-depressants aren't magic

These pills do not work over night. They take time. Generally, they are also taken along with talk therapy. But over time they can work to relieve depression, sadness and hopefulness.

Usually patients will start seeing improvement within three weeks. However, it can take up to three months to see their full benefit.

You may have to switch pills before you find the one for you

If you have not seen any improvement within three weeks of taking the pill, then it may not be the one for you. This means that your physician may need to prescribe another one for you. It doesn't mean that the pills won't work. It just means that you haven't found the right one, yet.

Brand name or Generic

Most of the time, there is no difference between a brand name anti-depressant and its generic version, expect the price. However, if you have taken the generic and saw no improvement in your condition, you can discuss this matter with your physician.

You shouldn't quit just because you are feeling better

Many patients may be tempted to quit taking their medication because they are feeling better. However, most doctors will recommend that their patients continue with treatment for at least a year.

Never, quit this type of medication without first speaking with your doctor. If he agrees, that you can quit, you may need to be slowly weaned from the drug.

Side effects and learning to cope with them

Yes, there are side effects to taking this medication, as there are most drugs. These side effects can include: nausea, feeling tired and loss of interest in sex. Your physician can help you deal with these side effects.

Drug interactions

Yes, there can be drug interaction problems with this medication. Tell your physician and pharmacist about all medication you are taking, including herbal and supplemental products.

Could anti-depressants improve your life? They can improve many people's lives for the better. Yet, you need to get the facts about this medication. You need to understand how to take it and you need to understand how it works. This is the only way to ensure that you are taking it correctly and the only way you can ensure that you are getting the whole benefit from it.
