Facts About Veterans Day You Probably Don't Know

Monday November 12th will be the Veterans Day. This is a day that is celebrated all around the country. The holiday originated on November 11, 1918 then know as Armistice Day. The purpose of the holiday was to remember the end of World War I. The name Veterans Day eventually became official thanks to President Dwight Eisenhower. This holiday is celebrated every year and there are some interesting facts that you probably don't even know. Here are just a few.
25 million. That is the number of military veterans in the United States. This is an amazing number. About 2 million of this veterans are women. Surprisingly only about 3 million are African Americans. Veterans are made up of all groups and backgrounds. They are around in an amazingly large number.

The Medal of Honor is the highest award for a military person to receive. Every year thousands of veterans are recognized around the world but two people also receive this Medal of Honor. Mary Walker, is the only woman ever to receive this award. She was recognized for heroic efforts during the Civil War. She helped both wounded Union and Confederate troops during the war.

Veterans Day is nationally celebrated at ceremonies around the Tomb of the Unknowns. This is a tomb that is dedicated to the memory of people who have died in the line of War in particular World War I and II. This memorial has been recognized by several countries all across the world over the years. To celebrate the honor of these men, a national color guard, made up of all military branches performers "President Arms" at the tomb. This is followed by the playing of Taps. The lives of millions of people are being recognized along with their incredible service.

There are a number of famous celebrates that have served their country. The list of celebs includes actors like Clint Eastwood, Chuck Norris, Alan Alda and even Bill Cosby. Great athletes have also served their country. Athletes like Rocky Marciano and Art Donovan. Even other names like President George Bush, Tony Bennett, Drew Carey even Shaggy have served their country. It's amazing that so many people have felt the need to serve their country.

Veterans Day is often the day that many people forget about. With Thanksgiving and Christmas right behind it, Veterans Day can easily be overlooked. Take time to look learn the history behind this important holiday. It's history is important and the people who have served and protected are county deserve to be remembered and honored.
