Failure as a Weapon to Achieve Success?

R. Bourne, Ph.D.

I have had my share of successes and failures in life. We tend to forget successes and to constantly remind ourselves about our failures. At least, this is my case. However, as I think about it, I can say that the majority of the times I have failed I was able to get closer to that goal I was going for in the first time. That is why I decide to write about failure as a weapon to achieve success.

Simply speaking failure is not achieving what you wished for. It may be that job you liked during your college years, the desired body weight and shape or fitness level, a long lasting relationship with your partner, etc. There is a negative implicit significance in the word failure. It is usually seen as a bad thing, something to avoid as the plague. On the contrary success (getting what you want) is seen as positive, growing, always great.

Failure can be a very decisive moment in your life and can shape your future accordingly. It is your job to decide how to look at failure. For example, in my early college years I failed at getting into the career I want it. However, after some exploration, research and talking to other people I decided to follow another path completely different. I can tell you I did d not became that wonderful lawyer I want it to be, but in the end I was able to pursue my interest in science and nutrition and even have earned a Ph.D. So, that early brush with failure (although incredible depressing at the time) was the driving force to go deeper into what I wanted it from life. I discovered I new route for my professional training.

Also, I have failed many times at losing weight. I have been trapped many times in the trap of the latest diet and quick solutions. However, every time I have tried a new dieting method I have learned something. Sometimes, I have learned how crazy these dieting regimes can be and sometime I have been able to find good things about many of them. In the end, many of my failures in this arena, have shaped my current view on obesity and weight loss. You can read about in http://optimalhealthsource.blogspot.com .

I can say that failure have shaped my life in many ways. I would say that in some instance it has been devastating and depressing but it has allowed me to become a better person. To summarize failure has allowed me to become: stronger, to gain confidence in my unseen abilities, to become active about how to shape my future and to seek helps from others. Overall failure is a weapon for our road to success.
