The general idea of combining faith and beliefs with the achievement of good health is nothing new. Many faith traditions have dietary laws or recommendations that prohibit the use of various foods, drinks and other substances such as tobacco. However, the underlying premise of weight loss programs incorporating faith principles moves beyond the realm of what is off limits. With weight loss based in faith-based directives, the plans seek to identify elements within a given scriptural canon that point toward foods, herbs, and liquids which will help in balancing the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of the individual.
Making use of principles and examples found in scriptural writings may focus simply on changing dietary habits. Depending on the faith tradition in question, this may mean eating more fresh fruit and vegetables even as meats are minimized. Certain meats may be avoided altogether, while different types of seafood are enjoyed more often. In some cases, authoritative writings associated with different belief systems may urge minimizing or avoiding certain herbs or grains while encouraging increased consumption of others.
Some faith-based weight loss programs address spiritual and emotional issues along with making dietary changes. For example, there are spiritual fitness approaches that encourage individuals to identify and come to terms with any elements, past or present, that conjure up feelings of worthlessness, regret, or a sense of failure. Using prayer, ministerial counseling, and other spiritual principles, the individual seeks to let go of these negatives that prevent body and mind from reaching the fullest potential. In their place, such attributes as experiencing the unconditional love of Deity, a sense of being a part of creation, and rediscovering awe and wonder in the surrounding world motivate the individual to strive toward a fuller spiritual, emotional, and physical existence.
While faith-based diet and fitness programs are often connected with Christianity, the general concept is also found in a number of different faith traditions. Islam, Judaism, and Buddhism are three examples of other world religions where the connection between the physical, emotional, and spiritual elements of life are recognized and addressed within the writings considered to be central to the faith.
In an age where the connection between the mind and the body has become more apparent to many people, the concept of faith-based weight loss simply makes sense. Utilizing spiritual principles and counsel to enhance mental and emotional function in turn has a positive impact on the body. As more healthy living habits are developed, the improved physical condition of the body in turn supports the cultivation of positive thoughts and attitudes. Far from being a means of losing a few pounds, faith-based weight loss can have the impact of making radical and healthy changes that lead to a happier and more balanced individual.
