Faith and Tim: 2 Shining Stars in Soul2Soul 2007

Jean-Paul Yen
According to Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, this is their last year touring together. Tim McGraw and Faith Hill married in the fall of 1996 and have three young daughters. They have combined to sell more than 55 million albums. I am proud to admit that I attended Soul2Soul II and Soul2Soul 2007. Both times I went to the Palace of Auburn Hills. First let me comment on the added bonus of an opening act this year. It was Taylor Swift.

She wrote the song "Tim McGraw" because Tim McGraw's music inspires her so much. Her favorite Tim McGraw song is "Can't Tell Me Nothin."

Taylor sang 5 songs from her debut self titled album including "Tim McGraw" and my personal favorite "Teardrops On My Guitar." Seeing as she has a talent for song writing and an above average voice, I think she has a lot of potential. For those not familiar with Taylor, she is a seventeen year old country singer originally from Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. The songs she sings about are auto-biographical as they are usually based on events that happened in her life.

Faith sang fourteen songs including her first #1 "Wild One" and her biggest success "Breathe." She sang one song that was not on the set list. She sang "Happy Birthday" to an eight year old girl, solidifying the fact that Faith is one of the nicest people you'll find anywhere in this universe. She also sang "Stronger" from her album "Cry." Faith put forth her best performance vocally during this song. Faith wore a very pretty white dress; a change from last year when she wore a polo shirt with vertical blue and green stripes.

Songs from "Fireflies" included "Mississippi Girl," "The Lucky One," "Sunshine and Summer Time," "Like We Never Loved At All."

Tim sang fourteen songs including "Live Like You Were Dying" and "Everywhere." The crowd appeared to be slightly more energetic during Tim's set. He sang his fist top 10 hit "Indian Outlaw," and his three released solo singles off his most current album, "Last Dollar (Fly Away)," "Suspicions," and "If You're Reading This." Tim wore a tee shirt with the sleeves cut off and jeans.

The couple did seven duets including "It's Your Love," "Like We Never Loved At All" and "I Need You." These songs are the best part of the show because the two singers are connected at such a high emotional and spiritual level.

The stage was very well designed to bring the performers close to the audience. In the middle of the stage is a raised circle platform which is surrounded by the bands. A catwalk makes an "X" to allow fans close contact with the entertainers.

The most oddly placed part of the show was a short skit biography of the two superstars performed with dolls. It told of each of them growing up and how they became singers and how they met and fell in love. It was kind of funny and cute but also I thought it should have come at the beginning instead of in the middle of the concert. I was surprised to see empty seats in the upper deck. I also noticed it was difficult to hear the lyrics because the band was louder than the vocalists.

I really admire Tim and Faith for putting on a three hour concert with no intermission. That takes a lot of planning and talent. When I look back on their careers I will always remember their duets and how they make a great team as a family and as country music singers.
