Fake Miley Cyrus Girl Kiss Not Half as Shocking as Her Hypocrisy

Valerie Ferrari
My first reaction upon learning that teenage singer, Miley Cyrus, kissed a girl during her live performance of her latest song, "Can't Be Tamed," on "Britain's Got Talent." was how boring and maybe even sad. Then I saw the performance and thought it was even sadder that this is what passes for talent these days. If the simulated kiss 17 year old Miley seems to engage in by putting her face really close to a girl dancer she catches as the girl dances in front of her was not meant to create controversy, why did she have to put that in the number? Cyrus went on her blog to defend herself with this disingenuous claim:

"I feel like the entertainment world has become nothing but a disgusting tabloid. I performed Can't be Tamed this week on one of my favorite shows here in the UK Britians [sic] Got Talent. Which is totally true, there were some amazinnnggg acts (but of course no one could focus on that.) .. during my performance I supposedly 'KISSED A GIRL" and this is the newest thing to cause controversy. I promise you I did not kiss her and it is ridiculous that two entertainers cant even rock out with each other without the media making it some type of story...."

Do her fans really buy this idiotic explanation? Apparently so. As Gawker sardonically speculates whether the 'sapphic smooch' will really give "Hannah Montana" fans a heart attack (per USA's Bonny Fuller's take on the situation), and put an end to the teen's career once and for all, her fans are hoping that she will "mature in acting and performing and not destroy her career."

Well, it's not going to destroy her career, even though I wish it would -- at least enough to get her to wake up. It will just destroy her image as a 'wholesome' role model, and she is maturing and going in the direction of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey, doing all the things that seem to be part of the formula to transition from "tween" star to sexy female entertainer. Sexy songs, sexy outfits, shocking antics. Only it's not shocking anymore.

If we see Miley out on the town drinking now or in a few years, or she turns up semi-nude or even nude in a film, or if a racy sex tape gets leaked, how shocking will it be? It's all been done before, true, but in Miley's case, you can already see it coming a mile away. So it's not only boring, my feeling is if she has any real talent, she won't need to go this route and should get herself some new advisors.

There really was a time when even female singers who didn't have the greatest pipes in the business didn't resort to cheap publicity stunts to get attention. They were glamorous and lady-like and managed to have successful singing careers. Some, like Diana Ross and Cher, even went into acting successfully. (Maybe Cher's not the best example with some of her later revealing videos, but she was much older by then and just trying to show she was still hot stuff, and many people thought it was pretty tasteless all the same).

I would say, "Miley, you don't need to make money this way so don't do it."

If anything destroys or taints her career, it should be playing her fans with this phony "the entertainment world has become nothing but a disgusting tabloid" stuff while simultaneously pandering to the tabloids.

Correction: Couldn't agree more. Just wonder if the management of these celebrities bother doing polls to see if people become more interested, attend more concerts, or buy more CDs if stars pull these kinds of stunts. Like you said most people know this is just to create controversy.

You hit the nail on the head Valerie. I can't imagine who in the world her actions appeal to. Certainly not me. She is headed down the wrong road for sure.

I enjoyed your article. Where are the real role models? This kind of behavior is not what I would want any young woman to emulate.

you see this all the time it's just how female singers let us know their sexually active. i need to know how we let them know WE DON'T CARE !!!!!

You have captured my feelings perfectly. I also find it ironic that it's trendy for women starlets to kiss each other, all while this country continues with its anxiety about allowing gays to marry or have any rights. I wasn't impressed by Madonna and Britney, and I am certainly not impressed with these antics. Who is this supposed to appeal to?
