Fall 2007 Fashion Trends: Turtlenecks, Platforms and Flattering Colors

Know What to Wear

Julie Murphy
This fall's newest fashion trends are on display in American stores. Be in the know when it comes to fashionable dressing. Below, I will tell you all about what's hot and what's not this fall in women's fashion trends.

The last several weeks, I have gone out shopping myself. I have been trying to get ahead this fall on which styles are going to be the most fashionable. Of all the different styles that I have seen in the stores, I would have to say that my favorite is definitely tunics paired with leggings. All of the stores that I have shopped have carried several styles of tunics - from knee-length with ruffles to straight A-Line cuts, the tunics are definitely in. Tunics can be worn as a (mini) dress or with pants (regular or legging pants). I have purchased several tunics this fall, and when I go out in the evening, I either wear the tunic with sandals, or the tunic with tights and boots. However, I get double use out of my tunics - when I go to work, I pair the tunic with either legging pants or regular pants and jewelry (big pendants) to dress it up. I am also seeing tunic and legging sets worn with Mary Jane shoes. So far, all of the feedback I have received on my tunic outfits has been extremely positive from co-workers.

Another big trend of the fall is turtlenecks, a favorite style to keep your warm and look great. The majority of turtle necks that I have seen in the stores thus far are ribbed turtle necks. The turtlenecks seem to be coming out in all colors, and a few that I have looked at have horizontal stripes. Tip : Be careful with horizontal stripes - they can either look fabulous and give you great lines, or they can be completely un-flattering.
Perhaps the biggest trend I have seen so far this fall is trench coats and short jackets. Trench coats are in every store, and in every color. Bold plaid prints are being paired with solid turtlenecks and wide-leg pants this fall for another new look of the season. I have noticed that the trench coats I have seen come down to the knee. I have also seen several waist length plaid jackts that that are being paired with plaid shirts and pants. Again, under the short jackets we are seeing the turtlenecks.

It appears that platform shoes are making a comeback this year as well. Being worn from wide style, to round and curvy, these shoes are all over the stores. Boots are also in - I have noticed a trend towards boots with buckles this year, which are way cute with short skirts. If you are not wanting to go with platforms or boots, strap style shoes (such as Mary Janes) are in style this season as well. For early fall, I am seeing some styles with open toes. There are also several that offer closed toes for more warmth as the fall season presses on.
So far this fall, the colors I have seen the most of are bold fall colors - dark oranges, browns, and neutral colors such as tan and ivory. The plaids that I have seen out so far range in color - some are the fall colors (orange, darker yellow, tan, brown) and some are more vivid, from black and light blue to bright orange, dark green and yellow.

So what to remember when shopping? Shop for styles and color that make you look best; turtlenecks in solid, muted colors can always be paired with a trendy or simple pant and a jacket to make you look your best. Just remember that all of these trends come in several different cuts and colors, so find the trends that most flatter your figure, and you will always look fabulous!
