Fall 2010 Outerwear Trends

As temperatures begin to drop, it's time to pull out those sweaters and coats from seasons past. While new trends emerge, some classic styles return featuring small alterations. Here are a few outerwear trends to cozy up to this season.

Chunky Sweaters:
Chunky knit sweaters are not only comfortable but will keep you snug and warm for the winter months to come. Try purchasing a size larger than you would normally wear. This allows you to layer comfortably if needed. Modern looks for this classic knit, is oversized. Look for over the knee styles that are perfect for pairing over skinny pants or belted with a pencil skirt. Look for chunky collars that wrap the neck or that drape over the chest. The most popular colors of the season are neutrals, blacks, grays, and khakis that are best accompanied by a colorful suede pump for that burst of unexpected color.

Cropped Sweaters:
The popular cropped sweater style of the 90s is back and took a turn on the recent runways. Bravely wear this look over a pair of destroyed or skinny jeans or warm the midriff with a sheer tank top underneath. Look for current styles that fall off the shoulder or that feature cutouts and unpredicted slashings throughout.

Fur:
Whether real or faux, fur is what's hot for fall and can be worn for any occasion. A fur vest over a long sleeve shirt and jeans is the perfect addition to turn a classic look into a cutting edge ensemble. You can also look for a cropped fur shrug to throw over your cocktail dress. Updated styles feature an unusual combination of leather and fur to balance the right amount of edge and glam.

Belted:
Some trench and pea coats generously come with an attached belt. But for those coats that don't, take the liberty of adding a belt of choice. The styling options are endless with different options of belts available. Take a skinny belt and cinch it at the waist or wrap a colorful obi belt around your otherwise dull neutral coat.
