Fall 5K Running Events in the Tampa Bay Area

I ran track in school, but the only long distance event was the 440 walk/run, which wasn't popular in competition. I wasn't a sprinter or hurdler, which were the preferred events. I went into field hockey instead.

By the time marathons, 5Ks and 10Ks became popular, I'd injured my ankles and knees in field hockey, bike riding accidents and showing German Shepherds. Now, I distance walk and dance.

This list of events includes several distances and various modes of covering the distances, depending upon the venue. They all have a 5K running component. All of these events have an after competition celebration and awards ceremony. Most of them have vendors and other exhibits. Some also have pre-race parties. You will need to check the websites for all information:

Check in times are 7 to 8am for the 5K, 8am for the Walk/Run, and 9:15am for the "Fun Run". The zoo's seventh annual "Zoo Run Run" goes through the entire zoo along the Hillsborough River. All participants get a race t-shirt and free admission to the zoo for the day.

Moving Towards a Cure '09

This event is being sponsored by Miles For Hope which funds research for a cure for brain cancer. This year, the venue offers: a 100k, 50k and 25k cycling route, a 5k timed chip run, a 5k walk and a 1 mile family walk/run. The Dual Challenge has been added which includes the 25k, non-timed, cycling and the 5k chip timed run. The 25k cycling begins at 7am then returns for the 5k chip timed run at 8am. There'll be a goody bag for all registered brain tumor survivors on the day of the event. All cancer survivors will be recognized. There's a special awards division for cancer survivors.

The 10k run begins at 7:30am, the 5k walk/run starts 8:15am and the 1 mile walk/run begins at 9:15am. Both the 10K and 5K will be chip timed.

You need to register teams by September 16. After September 17, only individuals can register. Team captains must create a team on-line before team members can register. This is a benefit for a cure for cancer.

The University of Tampa is hosting their third annual Spartan Challenge 5K at the Bob Martinez Sports Complex on October 17. The race includes an obstacle course that includes running through tires, jumping over hay bales (possibly a mud pit), and crawling under a cargo net.

This second annual race will be held on the Tampa Campus of the University of South Florida. Race day registration and package pick up begins at 7am. The first race starts at 8am. All races will begin between the Sun Dome and USF Band Tent on Alumni Drive. The races involve both the flat and hilly parts of campus. Mens and womens winners of the 10K and 5K will receive a trophy and a pair of new shoes. This event benefits The Fisher House, Haley's Cove and The VA Athlete Programs.

There'll be items on display and for sale at that time. Both the 1/2 marathon and the 5K will be run on the Pinellas Trail.
This race is part of the Aces are Wild series sponsored by American Running Company. Top placing overall individuals in the series win $500. Top placing age group individuals in the series win $100. All early and
pre-registered runners receive a technical jersey. Proceeds are going to the Childhood Obesity Foundation.

On-line registration ends November 23 at midnight. There're several early pickup and registration locations which are listed on-line. The 5k starts at 7:30am. The 1 mile follows at 8:30am and the 10k begins at 8:45am.
All races, except for the 5K fun-run, start at Keene Road south of Gulf to Bay Blvd and end in Jack White Stadium at Clearwater High School. This is a benefit event for several local charities, with a canned food drive in the stadium on race day.
