Not only does the cooler air revitalize people that are worn down from Summers oppressive heat and humidity, but it provides the perfect opportunity to clean ceiling fans that were neglected due to constant use when the temperature was high. Take down curtains to launder and dust blinds, change out light weight linens for heavier bedding and clean knickknacks and other decorative accessories. Most knickknacks can be safely cleaned in the dishwasher by using vinegar instead of dishwasher detergent. To help keep your home clean, change your air filter and vacuum out floor vents.
Another great idea, go through your wardrobe while switching out seasonal clothing, downsize the children's toys and clean out the garage and basement. By encouraging others to do the same you can have a yard sale with your friends and neighbors while the weather is still nice. Profits can be used for winter fun projects or DVD rentals for snowy nights. If a yard sale is too much of a hassle, donate unwanted items to charity. Thrift shops sell these items for low costs and are generally affiliated with a church or other organization that helps homeless and low income families.
With the dust and clutter taken care of, you can spend extra time winterizing your home. Hang storm windows and doors and varnish wooden decks to help protect them from winter moisture. Trim trees and fertilize your lawn and gardens to keep them healthy and prepare them for the next planting season. If you plan to use a fireplace to heat your home, it's a good idea to have your chimney professionally cleaned. Autumn's not too hot, not to cold climate makes it the perfect time to paint indoors or out.
Once your home sparkles, you can take care of the really important things like checking your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and getting your yearly flu shot. If you live in a region that generally receives heavy snowfall, it's a good idea to stock your pantry and medicine cabinets and check emergency supplies.
Mark your calendar! Make Fall Cleaning a week long event and include the whole family. Just think of it as a head start on your Spring Cleaning, besides, it will make your home more pleasant when your trapped inside all winter.
