Fill a glass or crystal bowl with a mix of harvest foods such as grapes, miniature pumpkins, squash, colored corn cobs or bright red apples. Candles are a great fall touch, reminding us of Halloween and the change in daylight savings time. Fill a glass cylinder with dried red or yellow corn kernels or dried cranberries and insert a candle, or drill a hole about three-quarters of the way through a miniature pumpkin or fresh apple and insert a candle in it. Countertops can be lined in the fall with harvest foods; jars of fresh, local honey, maple syrup in leaf-shaped bottles, jars of canned tomatoes, applesauce or peaches.
And don't forget the leaves! Red, gold and orange leaves, along with a few pine cones make a nice fall basket for the table or counter. Leaves can also be used in painting projects such as on kitchen curtains or linen napkins. Find some large, intact leaves and using a very small paint roller (found in craft stores), paint one side of the leaf with craft store paint similar in color to the leaf. Place the leaf, paint-side down onto the fabric. Cover with newspaper and roll over two or three times with a rolling pin. When the newspaper and leaf are removed, a beautiful and colorful impression of the leaf is left on the linen. This works best on muslin but can also be used on cotton. If natural materials are not available, just think fall colors and find potholders, dishtowels and placemats to match.
Fall has two major holidays around which themes can be created. October brings Halloween and the end of November is Thanksgiving season. For Halloween, the kitchen can be adorned with bowls of candy corn, a display of caramel or candied apple or popcorn balls says Autumn. Or, a variety of items with cartoon witches or cartoon ghosts on them get us in the fall 'spirit.' For Thanksgiving, cranberries can be used in a variety of ways as can items with turkeys on them.
Coming up with great fall decorating ideas for your kitchen doesn't have to be a chore. Not only is it easy, but you can have fun to boot! If all else fails, a trip to your nearest craft store will provide an endless number of ideas, plans and materials, but be sure to go in late summer or very early fall, as these will be replaced by Christmas crafts by the time the leaves turn!
