Fall Exercise... Milder Weather Can Mean More Options

Lynn Mac
Labor Day, the first day of school, and pool closings are all sure signs that summer is slowly winding down. In some respects it's easier to exercise in the summer: it just seems to be built in to the long seemingly endless days and visits to the beach. But take heart you sun worshippers, as there are many benefits to the fall in regards to your exercise routines. Along with the cooler air fall ushers in come opportunities to enjoy activities and sports you would never do in the heat of summer.

One activity in this category of unmentionables in the summer is tennis. If you have always wanted to play tennis, but can't stand the heat, fall is your friend. As a regular tennis player, I find it most enjoyable in the fall. With less chance of getting dehydrated by playing in extreme temperatures, fall can be the ideal time to resume or even begin a regular routine of tennis games or lessons. Check with local country clubs or parks for opportunities to play, join a team or take lessons. Tennis is a sport for the old and young alike. I've come across many sixty year olds that have given me a lesson or two in tennis. Because tennis can be played well into your older years, someone that has played for twenty or more years can have more insight than someone who is more fit and has only played five years. Tennis has a way of taking age out of the equation, at least in recreational tennis. So, regardless of your age, tennis might be something you'd want to take up in these upcoming milder days.

Another activity that falls into this category would be jogging or running. If you find it too draining and daunting to run in the summer, fall might be a different story for you. You might find this otherwise strenuous activity to actually be exhilarating and refreshing with the change of seasons. There's nothing worse than missing the beauty of the changing seasons because of a too busy life and this is one way to slow down and enjoy the great outdoors. If you've thought about starting a jogging or running routine, this might be the perfect time of year to lace up those running shoes and ease into it. Who knows, getting in shape over the fall and winter could be just the push you need to run year round. One thing is for certain, though: starting a new sport the wrong time of year could discourage you and erroneously lead you to think that you don't enjoy the sport, when it's actually the extreme temperatures you don't enjoy.

Another reason to look forward to fall in regards to your exercise routine is the added joy it brings to hiking. The crisp air seems to elevate the experience of hiking to another level. The colors and smells of fall turn hiking into a renewal of the soul... all while you are getting exercise! What more could you ask for?

So if you're a little bummed about the end of summer approaching, get those tennis racquets and hiking boots out. Take advantage of the cooler temperatures and perfect your forehand or take that long hike you wouldn't dare attempt in the scorching heat of the summer. You may find many sports enjoyable that you otherwise would deem torturous. As is always the case, you should discuss new exercise programs with your doctor.
