Fall Fashion 2009: Popular Trends for Women in Their 50s

Summer Styles Makes the Transition

Donna Davis
A woman in her 50s is maturing, but can still pull off some of the bright colors that are popular this fall. Jewel tones are very popular in autumn colors: mustard, amethyst, soft burnt orange and other rich colors are very popular.

Summer Transitions

Do you still have some wear left in your floral summer dress? You can pair that with a cardigan and belt this autumn. See this item at Lane Bryant for $128.

Skirts and Slacks
If you have great legs, you can wear above the knee styles, as long as not too much thigh is showing. Otherwise, wear a pencil skirt with a fitted or ruffled blouse. See this one for $79.50. And, dark colored slacks in soft fabrics or good-fitting dark jeans are perfect.

Blouses and Dresses

Ruffles are soft this season, in chiffon and soft knits, as well as silky solids. Fitted styles have asymmetrical necklines or flouncing, ruching, or gathers.

A good choice for evening is Badgley Mischka's Chocolate Pleated Taffeta Cap Sleeve Dress or his Indigo silk sequin detail elbow sleeve dress for $390.

Vera Wang has a lovely jewel tone dress in indigo for $229 and a beautiful Gold Satin Beaded detail shift dress in silk with a belted waist and beaded detailing at the neckline for $315. And if black is your color, looked at her organza layered belted sheath dress for $279. One more style in warmer tones for $321. Any of these dresses can be paired with a dark cardigan or fitted jacket.

Earrings
Dangling, chandelier earrings are very fashionable this autumn. Make sure the colors compliment the clothing you are wearing. They should be part of the outfit, not too bright or bold. These beautiful chandeliers for $19.50 from Lane Bryant are a perfect pairing for black jackets.

Lower Prices
You may be able to find separates in a lower price range at Kmart or Wal-Mart this autumn, but stick with the fall silhouette. These stores are usually carrying clearance items from the last season. If you want fashion, expect to pay full price. Here is one style you can purchase online for $22.49.
