Fall Fashion: The Return of the Classic Argyle Sweaters

Anne Masuda
The saying "what's new is old and what's old is new" couldn't hold much truer for fashion this fall. A perfect example is the return of argyle, whose literal definition is "knitted with a pattern of colored diamonds". They are showing up everywhere both on males and females, mostly on sweaters and cardigans, but in various colors and accents, ranging from the normal neutral colors of grey and brown, to pink and blue with sequins and beads to create an update to the classic argyle look.

Another change to argyle from the look from decades ago is the fact that they are showing up on young people's trends and fashion. No longer the look that only your grandfather might have worn, they are the trends among young men and women, having hip variations of the styles made by some of the most popular yet affordable brands such as Abercrombie and Fitch, Banana Republic, etc. With argyle appearing on shrunken cardigans, on the sleeves of sweaters, and even on hats, it can be seen as a retro fashion statement. It is also easily attainable, as you can find argyle sweaters in vintage stores, boutiques, and department stores -- which also means that you will be able to find one at almost every price level.

Although you can't really go wrong with wearing argyle sweaters, there is the chance that you may end up looking like a granny or an old-school golfer. Or too much like an uptight librarian. The key is not to wear it too loose, and to pair with modern pants or skirts. Wear it with a nice slimmer fitting jeans or cropped pants on women and nice slacks or jeans on men, and you'll have an outfit that can go both ways -- casual and formal. In fact, that is what makes argyle so versatile and easy to wear. It is practically foolproof!

From young to old, argyles are an easy way to update your look. And the best part of all is that it is comfortable -- nothing is as comfortable and/or easier to wear than a sweater on cold days. It's important to note that comfort is what makes certain trends a staple and so much more enjoyable to wear various occasions.
