Fall Fashion Trends for 2009

A Tale of Two Decades

Sandra Knasiak
The temperature is starting to drop, the leaves are changing, and the air is beginning to feel cool and crisp. Fall is officially upon us. Is your wardrobe ready? It's time to trade in your sun-dresses and sandals for cardigans and leggings. Here are some of the top trends to look out for this fall.

There are two decades of importance on the fashion scene this fall: the forties and the eighties. Let's start with the most recent, the eighties! Pull out your skinny jeans, power suits, motorcycle jackets, even bright red lipstick because it's all back. Neon pink, big shoulder pads and puffy shoulders on tops and dresses are expected to play a part in the fashion scene this autumn. Look out for leather bomber jackets and hardware embellished handbags and tank tops. If you're searching for studded accessories, Hot Topic is one of the best places to find such items. The headbands that were popular in the eighties get a softer look these days, with delicate embellishments such as a flower and bows. Headbands are all the rage right now and for good reason if you ask me. I think they are adorable. Also included in the eighties revival are bangles, dance wear, in the form of leggings.

If you're like me and think that the eighties attire belongs in the past, don't worry, there are still plenty of ways to look trendy and hip without feeling like Cyndi Lauper. Welcome the 1940's. Say hello to pencil skirts and fitted jackets. The clothing of the forties was very flattering to the female figure, making hour-glass figure enhancers such as wide belts very popular. Continuing with the feminine theme, expect to see tops adorned with feminine, yet subtle ruffles. Menswear is also poised to be very hot this season. Throw on some Boyfriend pants and Blazers or borrow a shirt from your man. Pair it with a pearl & ribbon necklace, boyfriend jeans, and a forties style hat for a perfectly chic ensemble.

Other hot trends to look out for this fall:

Plaid
A ruffled, plaid top a perfect piece to include in your fall wardrobe. Also consider a plaid headband, skirt, or jacket to add to your collection.

Black, Black, and even more Black
Proof once again that the little black dress never goes out of style. Black is such an amazing color because everyone can wear it. Slimming and extremely verstatile, black is a must have color for your wardrobe spectrum, especially for this fall.

Shimmer, Sparkle, and Shine: Metallic and Jewel Toned
Everyone looks glamorous with a little shimmer and shine. Finish off your look with fun and flirty accessories that shimmer and shine.

Black and White
I might not be crazy about the shoulder pads and eighties but I love the black and white look. It is an elegant color combination that looks lovely on everyone.

The Monotone Look
While it may sound boring at first, the monotone look is wonderful because it is instantly slimming and very classy. It is also attention getting (in a good way).

High Boots
Let your inner diva shine in a pair of sexy, high boots. Pair them with cute tights and a little black shirt-dress for a fun night out on the town.

Layering
Honestly, I don't know if layering will ever go out of style. It is so practical and it looks great. Stock up on black and white tanks or camisoles to achieve the layering look.

Scarves
It isn't quite cold enough for winter coats and mittens yet. But, donning a cute scarf can not only keep you warm, it can also be the perfect addition to your vintage tee and boyfriend jeans get-up.

Asymmetrical dresses
Also called Off the Shoulder dresses, asymmetrical dresses are fun and edgy.

There is no doubt an edgy flair in fashion this fall coupled with a hint of sparkle, shimmer, and shine. Whether you want to rock it out eighties style or you prefer the more feminine look of the nineteen forties, you have several great looks to choose from this autumn.
