Fall Foliage in Cades Cove Isn't Awash in Color Just Yet

Gayle Crabtree

It's been an odd year for fall foliage colors. My trip to Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was different than I had expected. Instead of seeing mountains ablaze in the orange, gold and scarlet they were a lackluster mix of greens and tans. Some red and yellow were thrown in for good measure but it wasn't typical for East Tennessee.

A trip to Cades Cove always makes your soul sing. Despite the disappointing fall foliage there is still plenty of reason to enjoy the park. Wildlife almost always helps to make a fall color trip to Cades Cove even more memorable. Wild turkey, several deer and a foraging bear turned out to strut their stuff. Watchful park rangers made sure everyone kept a safe distance from the bear.

The loop was crowded with people who were hoping to see the brilliant fall colors that East Tennessee is known to have. Everyone was in a jovial good mood. Pull-offs in Cades Cove were used frequently so traffic could flow. Family picnics, photos, a couple having engagement photos made... These activities are all woven into the fabric of fall in East Tennessee.

But like a weaver at work on her fabric the fall foliage in East Tennessee is still a work in progress. Mother Nature hasn't finished her masterpiece. Fall colors in Cades Cove may still be on her palette this year. Time will tell what the final brushstrokes will bring.

This has been a year for muted foliage colors here in Maine as well.
