Fall Foliage at Quabbin Reservoir, Massachusetts in Autumn

Fall Foliage in Massachusetts

April Higney
One of the best places in my memory I can recall for the Autumn season was the Quabbin Reservoir in Massachusetts, near the Belchertown area. The area held unsurpassed beauty with its aqueducts, waterways, and observatory tower to view the eagles from afar. To my best recollection, the area was created of four flooded townships to preserve an outstanding land of incredible views of the mountains and waterways. In the fall many travel for miles to get a glimpse of all the color. Artists with easels set up along the outer banks with oil paints and watercolors painting the scenes of the most majestic locations they see in their vision. Picnic tables with children playing frisbee and kites floating along in the wind.

Fishing along some of the area waterways, catch and release fun. Hiking and biking trails along the many spots to stop and see the sights. Deer eating the grasses along the edge, barely startle in this protected land, much like going back in time, looking at you in interest yet without the fear of man's presence.

In my youth I recall some moments of playing frisbee there with my sister and brother-in-law. We had much fun looking into the viewers spotting the eagles flying and perching upon the mountains in the trees, soaring over the many lakes, flying a kite, and being outdoors.

The fall is the most inviting, myself being an artist, loving to paint, more now in my life than any other time, I plan to someday go back there to take in these views and place them to canvas.

The small town surrounding the Quabbin Reservoir are wonderful. Generally friendly country folks bearing a smile despite their hard work at times. Small home-style restaurants where you can sit with your family and have a meal, with hand-dipped ice cream so delicious that it makes you want to come back in any season.

Part of the reason why I miss the northern states so greatly beyond family are the wonderful seasons. The fall being a true favorite because the air is so comfortable and the beauty that surrounds you is amazing. The Quabbin Reservoir was part of a great portion of my life that I so much enjoyed. Just being there in the all natural surroundings was one of the best points in my life. If you ever go to Massachusetts, don't miss this wonderful relaxing area sure to soothe your soul from a planned trip.
