Fall Foliage Tours in the South

Catching the Colorful Leaves of Fall

M. E. Guy
I have an uncle who resides in California but makes a regular trip to the south each fall. When asked why he only visits during the fall, he noted that fall is such a gorgeous time of year because of the foliage. In the southern region of the United States, our outdoor landscape beams as though it is a famous artist's grand masterpiece. Fall foliage typically displays peak colors from late September until mid-November. The burnt oranges, crimson reds, and striking yellows mix with other hues to make this southern region of the country such a magnificent setting. If you can, I recommend getting out for a bike ride or a hike through many of the region's areas. However, there are a few fall foliage tours that I absolutely believe individuals should not miss if they get the opportunity.

As you travel west through the state of Mississippi along Interstate 20, you will eventually reach the city of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Vicksburg sits atop high bluffs and overlooks the Mississippi River. If you travel down to 1208 Levee Street shortly before 5:00 p.m., you can board the Sweet Olive Riverboat. For just $20, an adult can cruise around for an hour and fifteen minutes on the Mississippi River. From the boat, you'll have a great view of the shoreline during the fall. The time goes by swiftly so if you prefer a longer trip, you'll have to work out the special details with the captain. The Sweet Olive does arrange and conduct private charters.

Just about an hour north of Atlanta, Georgia is a special place for viewing a fabulous fall panorama. The little town of Helen, Georgia resembles and is modeled after an Alpine village. This small town is situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains and serves as the beginning of the Chattahoochee River. There are no official guided tours but if you pay a visit to the welcome center at 726 Bruchen Strasse, you will find staff waiting to help you with your self-guided tour of the region. During October, the fall foliage generally hits the highest point. This time period coincides with Oktoberfest in Helen. The surrounding mountain trails will take you to points with awe-inspiring vistas. My favorite mountain near Helen, Georgia is Mount Yonah. The view from this location overlooks the surrounding valley and neighboring hillsides and is quite stunning during the fall foliage season. Likewise, if you are into repelling, Mount Yonah is a great place to utilize your ropes and repel down the cliffs while catching a great view of the fall leaves. The United States Army actually uses the area for military training on occasion.

Finally, another great location for a pristine view of fall foliage is Ellijay, Georgia. The mountains in this region are part of the Appalachian chain of mountains. Ellijay is famous for apples and their numerous apple orchards. If you visit during the autumn, you get a double treat of seeing the multicolored leaves as well as picking and sampling the various varieties of apples grown in the region. Ellijay even has an apple festival during the fall which will allow you plenty of opportunity to tour the area and see the fall foliage.
