There's always something cooking in the Lowcountry around Charleston, SC, but the cooler weather of fall brings with it a flurry of seasonal foodie activity. Whether you're looking for a cooking class, wine tastings, special events, or just some good food and wine, you can find it somewhere in the Charleston area. Check out these events whether you're planning a visit to the area or are fortunate enough to live here.

The Coastal Carolina Fair runs October 25th through November 3rd, 2007. In its 51st year its mission is to provide lots of good, clean family fun while also giving back to the community. They are able to do this because the event is run by volunteers and is sponsored by corporate supporters. Last year they returned more than a quarter of a million dollars in grants to local nonprofits. Like any good state fair there will be lots of musical entertainment, rides, games, and good old fashioned food and beverages. If you can't find something good to eat at the Coastal Carolina Fair, you're not looking! For information on tickets, directions and schedules visit www.coastalcarolinafair.org or else call 843-572-3161.

On November 20th at The Woodlands Inn there will be a Wines of the World tasting event "The Rising Stars of Spain." The wine tasting begins at 6:30pm and the 4 course pairing dinner at 7:30pm. The cost is $79. On November 22nd, Thanksgiving Day, the Woodlands also present a Thanksgiving Dinner and Dessert Buffet. The cost is $74 for adults and for children under $11 it's $25. For more information on these events visit www.woodlandsinn.com or else call 843-308-2115.

If you want to prepare the perfect pie crust for your Thanksgiving feast, consider taking the Pie workshop at Charleston Cooks! on Thursday, November 8th at 6:30pm. You will learn how to make a variety of flaky, tender crusts and sweet and savory fillings, such as maple sweet potato pie, chocolate coconut macadamia cream pie, and crab filled tartlets. If you've always wanted to learn more about grilling slow and smooth, southern style, check out the Thanksgiving on the Grill class by local pitmaster Jimmy Hagood of Tidewater BBQ and Specialty Foods South. It's on Thursday, November 15th at 6:30pm. Also, if you never know what to do with those Thanksgiving leftovers, Charleston Cooks! has a class on November 20th at 6:30pm to show you how to re-create them into gourmet delights. We're talking tomatillo turkey enchiladas, pumpkin pie ice cream and more. For more information or to sign up for these classes visit www.mavericksouthernkitchens.com or call 843-722-1212.

Whether you're scouting out cotton candy and fried Snickers and Twinkies at the Coastal Carolina Fair or decide to take a class on how to grill your Thanksgiving meal, there's something in Charleston, SC for every type of foodie. I hope to see you at one of these local food and wine events!
