Exercise Tips Just in Time for Fall

Sandra Knasiak
Fall is the season of change and the perfect time to fall into a new fitness routine. A new season is always a new beginning. If you are planning to begin an exercise regime this fall, you have chosen the right time. If you are already exercising regularly, give yourself a giant pat on the back. Keep reading for tips on how to keep your fitness program going strong this fall.

I know first-hand how easy it can be to lose your enthusiasm for exercise once summer comes to a close. The cool, autumn weather makes many of us want to cuddle up in front of the fire with a good book instead going out for a run. However, autumn provides us with ideal weather to workout in. The coolness of the season makes exercising outdoors quite comfortable. Run, walk, hike, or bike. Or, do all of the above! Fall is a great time to begin an outdoor exercise program. The feeling of the crisp air against your face, the beauty of the changing colors, and the sound of the leaves crunching beneath your feet makes exercise much more enjoyable.

Make the most of this glorious season. Go on a nature walks. Get the kids involved and make it a learning experience. Gather up pine cones, leaves, acorns, twigs, etc. When you get home look up the names of the different types of leaves you found. Don't have any kids? Use the materials you gather to make a decorative centerpiece or wreath for you home. Or, bring your camera along and take pictures of the beautiful scenery around you. Frame the pictures and display them in your living room.

If you have ever considered beginning a running regimen, there is no better time to start than in fall. As with walking, fall weather is ideal for running. If you are new to running, I highly suggest joining a running group. The camaraderie is priceless and you can learn a lot others. Look for a group in your area on MeetUp. Your local running supply store might have groups or classes that they organize so check there too.

Hiking, one of my favorite forms of exercise is also a perfect choice for this spectacular season. It is an excellent workout and provides the perfect opportunity to connect with nature. Do a hike in an hour, a day, or for an entire weekend. It's completely up to you. There are thousands of beautiful trails out there just waiting to be explored.

Keep these general tips in mind when exercising outside in the fall. Dress in layers so you can adjust your body temperature and be sure to wear comfortable shoes that provide enough support. Lastly, please be safe. Don't exercise alone in the dark and always be aware of your surroundings. Always take your ID with you or attach a luggage tag with your name and address to your shoelace.

Perhaps you are looking for a type of exercise that is more a bit more social. Join a team. What about Soccer or Volleyball? Check with your local community or recreation center to see what they have available in your area. Or you could invite some friends over and get your own game on! It would be a great workout, a ton of fun, and it wouldn't cost a penny.

For many, fall is back to school time. Get back in shape at school by enrolling in a fun fitness class at your local community college. Many colleges offer a wide array of fun classes that will whip you into shape at very affordable prices. Step out of your comfort zone and give something new a try. These classes are usually continuing education classes, which are cheaper and no credit is awarded. Consider fencing, Pilates, kickboxing, or Yoga. Or, put on your dancing shoes and dance your way to fitness. Dance classes aren't just for kids anymore. There are several different adult dance classes available including belly-dancing and even pole-dancing! See how fun fitness can be!

Exercise and good nutrition go hand in hand. Fuel your fitness efforts by incorporating healthy fall favorites such as pumpkin, cranberries, and apples into your diet. Try this recipe from Prevention magazine for a delicious, nourishing Pumpkin Smoothie that tastes like Pumpkin Pie in a glass: Blend 1/2 cup canned pumpkin, 1/2 cup vanilla soy milk, 1/2 cup crushed ice, 1 tablespoon honey, and 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice. Pour, drink, and enjoy. This delectable smoothie only has 2 grams of fat per 8-ounce glass! An apple a day really does keep the doctor away. Slather some peanut butter on apple slices for a punch of protein. Keep your energy up with your own Autumn Trail Mix. Combine toasted pumpkin seeds with dried cranberries, dark chocolate chips, and walnuts.

Above all, you should fall in love with your exercise routine. Find something that makes you feel great and that you love to do. It won't even feel like exercise and chances are, you'll stick with it!
