Each week, the celebrity and their mentor work on a new rap, some weeks are ones that are picked for them, others are ones that the judges pick, but the best one has to be the unique rap written by the celebrity. Not only are they learning how to rap, but they are learning what it takes to be a rapper, from writing to performing.
So what celebrities signed up for this type of show? It's quite a mix, full of surprises from several different disciplines. We have celebrity gossip blogger, Perez Hilton with his mentor Tone Loc. Hilton, best known for dragging celebrities through the mud on his blog, is going to have to keep himself in check or he'll get kicked off before he can be voted off.
We also have sexy playboy bunny, Kendra Wilkinson with her mentor Too Short. Not only is Kendra a bunny, she is one of the stars of The Girls Next Door and one of Hugh Hefner's girlfriends. She's out to show everyone that she can do something more than shake her ass. The question is, however, can she?
Hills star Jason Wahler brings a bit of Orange County style to the stage with his mentor, Bubba Sparxxx. Jason wants to prove that Eminem ain't the only white boy who can rap. Can he spit the flow or will he be laughed back to The Hills?
Shar Jackson, child star of Moesha and ex of K-Fed, teams up with mentor MC Lyte to show her kids that she can rap, unlike their father. Shar has proven that she can act, sing and have a family, but can she have a better rap career than Kevin? We'll have to tune in to see.
Shar's Moesha co-star, Countess Vaughn teams up with mentor Warren G to try to one-up her former co-star. She is out there proving that fat girls can rap just as well as the skinny girls. We already know that she can sing, since she won Star Search nearly 20 years ago, but can you teach an old girl new tricks?
Speaking of old dogs and new tricks, Skid Row front man Sebastian Bach teams up with Kurupt to learn a few new tricks of his own. Can a rocker turn rapper? Sebastian sure is going to try hard. Hopefully Kurupt can teach the old dog a few new tricks.
Anyone remember Pedro in Napoleon Dynamite? Yeah, me either, but the actor behind the character, Efrain Ramirez is paired off with his mentor Bizarre to try to make a rapper out of Pedro. Can he overcome the lenguage barrier and become a rap superstar? That's going to be one tough hill to climb.
And that leaves one more celebrity, former NFL running back for the Atlanta Falcons, Jamal Anderson with mentor Redman. We know he can run, catch and tackle, but can he tackle rapping? It doesn't really seem likely, but at least he's there trying to represent the ATL.
It definitely should be interesting to see what the celebrities make of the rapping, especially with judges like Big Boy, DMC and da Brat giving them feedback. As long as they listen to the feedback and work hard, they should at least be able to learn a little something, even if it is that they aren't meant to rap.
Tune in Thursdays on MTV to see what happens.
