Fall Season Harvest Afghan Crochet Project

Liz Copeland
If you're looking for a fall season crochet project idea that will serve you well year after year, you might want to consider an afghan. They brighten the room, keep people warm as they adjust to cooler temperatures, and they make excellent gifts. I've decided to share my crochet project for fall.

The crochet harvest afghan pattern is highly adaptable for your fall season ideas. You can replace the crocheted squares I've used with your own 6" squares, change the colors a bit and still stay in the 'harvest' colorway, and make more squares for a larger afghan and less for a smaller afghan. The squares in my example are 6", and the border is 1". You can add a decorative edging or fringe to the edges as well. I didn't, because I wanted to keep it simple enough for most people to be able to do.

Harvest colors:

Warm oranges, reds, and golds with accents in browns and greens. Think of the fall colors in nature. Leaves on the trees changing, pumpkins and gourds entering the farmer's markets, this will be your palette.

Size:

50" wide x 64" long without edging

Supplies:

4 colors of yarn. 3 for the squares, and one for the borders.

I chose TLC's Claret, Dark Thyme, Dark Brown, and Butter because that's what I had on hand. If you want to change them up a little, you can replace Butter or Dark Thyme with Persimmon, which is a nice orange that will really brighten it up. You can also use a different type of yarn entirely, but this pattern calls for worsted yarn, and lots of it.

TLC yarn is 312 yards per skein. For the full afghan (7 rows plus borders across and 9 rows plus borders down), you'll need 5 skeins of Butter, Dark Thyme, and Claret, and 4 skeins of Dark Brown. These are estimates, but TLC yarn has no dye lot. I tried to overestimate how much you'll need as it varies based on stitch size (and if you're like me, errors).

I used a G hook, but you'll want to go with whatever size gets you the 6" square.

You'll also need a plastic needle to weave in ends and scissors.

For squares, I used #77 from 99 Granny Squares to Crochet by Leisure Arts (#3078). It's available at amazon here if you want to see it or buy it. As I said, you can substitute another 6" square if you like.

Border:

In Dark Brown (or your substitute):

Round 1: With RS facing, join Dark Brown with sl st in any ch sp corner, ch 1, work 3sc in same ch sp corner. *sc in each dc across to next ch sp, work 3 sc in corner; rep from * 2 times, sc in each dc across to first ch sp, join with sl st in first ch.

Round 2: ch 1, cs in same st, 3sc in next sc (corner), *sc in each sc across to next corner, 3sc in next sc; rep from * 2 times, sc in each sc across to first ch, join with sl st to first sc, finish off.

Now view the diagram in the pictures above. This is how your afghan will be assembled. Assemble afghan by referring to chart and making 7 vertical strips from 9 completed squares. Then join strips.

To Join:

With RS together, whip stitch in Dark Brown tbl

Abbreviations:

ch - chain

dc - double crochet

rep - repeat

rs - right side

sc - single crochet

sl st - slip stitch

sp - space

tbl - through back loop

I hope you enjoyed this fall season crochet project idea, and please let me know how it turned out. Feel free to link this on Ravelry so I can check out your progress and ideas!
