Fall is the Time to Weed, Seed and Feed Your Lawn

Deb Martin-Webster
Your lawn has been kind to you all summer. It was your outdoor dining room, recreational area and activity center for you and your friends. It has undergone a lot of wear and tear over the summer months and now it's time to replenish and repair it for next year.

The best time to do fertilize your lawn is September and October. It is important to replace those nutrients your lawn needs to survive during the winter months. Here are some lawn and garden products that will help to bring back your lawn's healthy appearance.

For the best results you should first identify your grass. Lawn products work differently on different types of grass. Match up the product with the grass and seed you've used to grow your lawn. If you have shaded areas there are products that promote growth both during the spring and summer months. Over the winter other products may be needed to stimulate grass root production.

If you are unsure on which products to buy check with your lawn and garden professionals. Places like Lowes and Home Depot are happy to show you the lawn care products you will need. They can also suggest the best way to apply weed and feed products, i.e. if you require spreaders or liquid spray units. I found that Scotts Lawn and Garden products have a great selection of products to help your lawn stay healthy over the winter months. It's important to know when to use these products to achieve a green lush weed-free lawn.

When to Seed and Feed: Fall is the best time to seed and feed your lawn. The days are warm and the over-night temperatures are cool. These temperature differentiations produce moisture which helps your lawn germinate your grass seeds. Products that perform multiple purposes work well. Scotts Turf Builder WinterGuard Fall Lawn Fertilizer is great for heavy trafficked lawns. Easy to use push spreaders distribute your seed and feed evenly.

The Right Lawn Products: It's important to have the right product for your lawn. If you have lots of trees shade seeds work best. For full sun and shade lawns try Scotts Turf Builder Sun and Shade Mix and Scotts Water Smart System. These two products help hold in water to increase grass growth. It cuts your watering and sprinkler time down to a minimum helping to conserve water. Their EZ Seed is and excellent product and is guaranteed to grow in the toughest areas of you lawn. It has super absorbent growing material that absorbs water and encases the grass seed in moisture protective layers.

Preparing Your Lawn for Seeding: Rake up leaves and garden debris. If your mower has mulch setting mulched leaves can help insulate your lawn during those winter months.

Weed Seed and Feed: If you have a small lawn you may prefer to seed by hand. If your lawn is more than an acre you may choose to seed with a seeder. Most mowers have a towable seeder that will evenly distribute seed and feed.

Watering: Keep your lawn watered after your seed and feed. If you have a sprinkler system watering your lawn in the early evening after they sun has set will help conserve water and help to germinate seeds.

Your lawn is the showcase of your home. Weeding, seeding and feeding it will help continue to keep it plush and green for years of family fun and entertainment.
