Reality TV that Gives More Than Money

Back again for another season is NBC's Biggest Loser. This season, however, is not like the previous seasons. They are putting 18 overweight American's on the fast track to a better life. Under the guidance of doctors and trainers, the contestants are put through a rigorous diet and exercise program to change their lives.

This season has not two, but three trainers for the contestants, along with Alison Sweeney as the new host of the show. Bob Harper and Kim Lyons return to their positions as the leaders of the red and blue team, determined by the winners of a foot race across the desert.

After their initial meeting and foot race, the contestants get to know each other so that the team captains, Jerry for the blue team and Phil for the red team. The following morning, they gathered back together for the team picking. Bob's blue consists of Jerry, Kae, Neil, Nicole, Patty and Ryan. Kim's red team consists of Phil, Amber, Amy, Bryan, David and Lezlye. Once the teams were chosen, six people were left standing with the idea that they were going to be sent back home to go on without spending time with trainers.

Once the two teams were on the bus and on their way to the dorm, the remaining contestants learn that they are not being sent home, but that Jillian has returned to take them on and create her own black team. That's right folks, Jillian is back and badder than ever and her black team consisting of Bill, Hollie, Isabeau, Jez, Jim and Julie are going to spend the first two weeks together away from the other teams.

After meeting Jillian, the black team immediately dives into their workouts, getting put through the paces of a rough, sandy work-out. They had to hand giant tires, sand bags and each other's weight, learning how to work-out without the use of a gym. This was the first step in teaching them that there are no excuses not to work out, that they can work out wherever they are, no matter the conditions.

The blue and red team got to settle into their dorm before they got their first weigh-in, but it wasn't long before Bob and Kym were putting their team through their first steps to a new, healthier lifestyle. They not only focused on working out, but they also learned about their diet and what they were putting into their bodies on a daily basis. They were faced with all the junk that they were eating and just how bad it was for them. They learned different dieting techniques, letting them see that they can eat healthy without starving.

After their first few days of working out, the blue and red team faced their first elimination challenge. They had to load baggage onto a jet, then they had to move the plane down the tarmac to win letters from home. The blue team got a first jump on moving their plane, but the red team pulls it out in the end and crosses the line first. The trainers continue to work their teams, knowing that a weigh-in and elimination is on the line at the end of the first week.

The teams and their trainers come face to face once again with the dreaded scale, finding out their fate and initial weight loss. First up is the red team, Bryan dropped 15 pounds, Lezlye lost 9 pounds, Amy lost 10 pounds, David shed 20 pounds, Amber lost 7 pounds, and Phil is now 26 pounds lighter. Then up comes the blue team! Patty had a loss of 13 pounds, Ryan lost 15 pounds, Nicole dropped 8 pounds, Neil lost 22 pounds. Kae got up on the scale next with a loss of 20 pounds, but then Jerry shocks everyone with a loss of 31 pounds. That's right, Jerry lost the most weight for the week and for the show in general.

The blue team's overwhelming weight loss means that the red team has to eliminate one of their own. They get one day to decide who it's going to be, then gather with their votes at the elimination table. With a majority, the red team decides to send Amber home, since that was what she said she wanted during the first few days. Having filmed the series throughout the summer, they show Amber after leaving the show. She did not give up once she got home, she continued on her own and has lost 65 pounds and is getting into shape.

Next week, the red and blue team continue on without knowledge of the black team's existence, but that will only last until it comes time for the weigh-in. They will be joining the other two teams at the dorm to continue on in head-to-head competition against the others.
