Fall TV: Gossip Girl Premieres

My Take on What is to Come on Gossip Girl

What a better way to attract an audience than by sexy, dirty secrets and six young, attractive cast members? Gossip Girl's season premier aired tonight, September 19, 2007, at 9/8c. The show seems promising to young adults and seems to be a Sex in the City meets The OC hit.

The show bases out of Manhattan's Upper East Side with an unknown "gossip girl" who relays the lives of Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) to all who attend her upscale private school.

The gossip gets juicy when Serena returns from her mysterious disappearance to a boarding school. She returns to find her friendship with Blair in ruins, many awkward run-ins with Blair's boyfriend, Nate (Chace Crawford), and an unexpected date with Dan (Penn Badgley).

Blair and Serena's friendship only gets more complicated when Blair's boyfriend confesses he slept with Serena before she left for boarding school. This only leaves us to believe that her disappearance very well could be due to the affair between the two.

Not only is Nate distracted by Serena's return but also by his father's expectations for his life. He feels tied down and that his life has already been planned out for him. This leaves Blair confused about their relationship and most likely looking for revenge on Serena. I suspect Nate and Blair will not be able to resolve their relationship, mainly on Nate's upper hand and say on the matter. I also feel that Nate will break away from his father's expectations of his future and lead the life of a creative artist, seeking to change the world.

Chuck, Nate's childhood friend, only seems to complicate Nate's life more by constantly luring him into his wild and irresponsible life of drinking and smoking. Chuck, the dangerous one in the group, has the power to destroy a few reputations with his knowledge of Serena and Nate's sexual relationship. I see Chuck using his knowledge of the juicy affair to try to lure Serena to sleep with him. He will offer her his vow of silence for a hot, steamy night where I assume he will promise her all sorts of satisfaction.

And lastly, there is Dan, the outsider of the clique along with his sister, Jenny (Taylor Momsen). After Dan "bumps" into Serena, his long-time crush, he gets the dream of a lifetime, a date with her. I assume Dan and Serena's relationship will slowly evolve while he tries to discover her only to realize she is too broken to fix. I see Dan falling madly in love only to find Serena with an endless list of reasons as to why they can't be together, and I can't help but feel that Nate will is at the top of that list.

Jenny, Dan's sister, seems mesmerized by fashion and popularity and will most likely be the one who falls into the clique's trap. She's the youngest and the most naïve leaving her to do almost anything to fit in. Jenny is also a creative youngster; I imagine she will use her abilities to lure and inspire those she admires. I can see her sewing talent and creativity taking her far to compete with others in the fashion industry.

Consisting of a twist of friendship, lies, sex and money the show promises to keep you on the edge of your seat wanting more and living for Wednesday nights. Disappointing as it may seem, the show's major downfall is a lack of morals. There doesn't seem to any sort of life lessons to be learned just money, fashion, and popularity.
