Fall TV: Moonlight Preview

Vampires Meet Network TV

Margaret Kerr
CBS kicks off it's new fall lineup with a few new shows starting September 24th. Among their line-up is a great new show called Moonlight starring Alex O'Loughlin as Mick St. John. A new direction for CBS, Moonlight tells us the story of a Mick St. John, a private investigator who was bit by his vampire bride on their wedding night.

Now, St. John tries to balance his new life of fighting his undead adversaries and his love for a mortal woman which for this vampire isn't easy. He must make sure his two lives never clash, keeping his love out of danger and keeping himself alive.

What makes St. John the target of so much danger? He is still living his mortal life as a private investigator, to much behest of the vampire community. He doesn't want to live his vampire life, trying to resist the basic vampire nature. Not only does he try to resist his nature, he tries to resist his vampire bride and sire, Coraline.

If falling in love with a mortal wasn't bad enough for St. John, the mortal he falls for is a reporter, investing the recent increase in unusual homicides in the area. What makes St. John even more unique is that he is not a newly risen vampire, he has been living his life this way for 60 years now.

The eternally young and handsome St. John has spent his undead life doing good and fighting evil, living a life against everything that is expected of a vampire, but now he has decided to pursue a real relationship with his mortal flame. Will she be open to his pursuit, or will she resist his charms?

Starring Alex O'Loughlin (The Shield, The Invisible), Sophia Myles (Dracula, Tristan & Isolde), Jason Dohring (Veronica Mars), and Shannyn Sossamon (Dirt, The Holiday), Moonlight may not have a big name cast, but behind the scenes, they more than make up for it with Executive Producers Joel Silver (The Matrix, Lethal Weapon) and Chip Johannessen (Beverly Hills 90210 and Dark Angel).

Moonlight is CBS's first foray into science fiction and fantasy in a few seasons and should do well, despite the critics and focus groups only giving it one out of four stars when they were given a preview of the pilot. Moonlight is something that the younger fans should enjoy with the prominence of fantasy fiction being among the higher ranking genres.

Are you nuts? This show is awful
Moonlight is based on Laurel K. Hamilton's series of books. Gosh, there is well over a dozen of them. Many have been on best sellers lists. Their common denominator is the heroine Vicki St. John-a WOMAN. VICKI, not MICK. My mind is just boggled that a best selling SERIES with a female heroine that already has a substantial following would be made into a TV show with the heroine changed into a man. Hamilton's books have met with success based on the characters she created. Why would the powers that be change something that was already successful. And did you see what they created? It was bad. It was really, really bad.
