Falling Behind

April Higney
An echoing voice trailed down the long corridor.
By lantern light, she followed,
in the darkness, seemed like shadowed footsteps,
there for a moment, then disappearing,
felt as though she were right behind him,
as she once did, along the quiet road.

He always remained a few steps ahead,
she remembered him in the glistening sunlight,
he'd pause momentarily to wait for her to catch up,
as she was so busy, absorbing the wonders, everything within her sight.

Her long red velvety gown, draped along the dusty old floors,
shining slightly in the lantern glow, and the moon as she passed by the window.
The voice again, whispers, she feels a breeze pass by her,
too quickly, her senses come to her, it couldn't be him,
he left her world such a long time ago.

He always remained a few steps ahead,
she wanted him to slow down, take her hand.
He'd call out to her to follow,
tell her she was walking to slow,
she'd sigh, absorbing the wonders,
something he could never quite understand.

Her corset too tight, she loosened the ties, let her hair down, took a deep breath,
stopping to pause momentarily, a lightened shadow behind her in the window,
too quickly, she turned, whispers, a kiss upon her cheek,
she feels a breeze pass by her,
but he left her world a long time ago,
but must it be,
he left her freshly picked wildflowers,
at the window, overlooking the quiet road,
where he was always a few steps ahead,
and she would walk too slow.

The imagery is wonderful. You can feel the heaviness of the red, velvet dress and you can feel her frustration that she wants him to slow down with her.
