Falling Through the Cracks

Reformers Were Not Supposed to Make it Through the Maze of Corporate Trickery

This was not supposed to happen. But somehow the McCain-Palin ticket fell through the cracks. It's sort of like the old casino story. You know, the one that says the house always wins. But this time the house lost. Yes, the house lost big time. Sure, no one ever really comes right out and says it, but, for the most part our politicians are doing the bidding of corporate America and not really representing John and Jane Q citizen.

But, this is nothing new. In fact we were founded as a Republic and not a Democracy. When we won the Revolution only men that owned property could vote in any election. Our founding fathers thought that only people of means were clever enough to make serious decisions on election day. Since the early days, America has slowly evolved to allow more freedoms, at least in theory anyway. But the rich and the powerful are really still calling the shots for all intent and purposes.

So how in the world did reformers like McCain and Palin ever get the nomination from their party? I suspect that George W Bush handed them the nomination on a silver platter. And yes, this is about the worst sort of nightmare George Bush could ever have. It's ironic when you really think about it. Some Republicans had called Bill Clinton, the best Republican the country ever had, due to his spending restraint. And the fact that Bill Clinton had built up a tremendous budget surplus, gave George W. Bush a tremendous opportunity to make America great again. But instead George W. Bush spent more money than any Democrat ever spent in history and has rung up a tremendous deficit that is sorely hurting the dollar. But yet, the Democrats are not calling George W Bush the best Democrat that ever served as President.

Despite being flat broke at one point in the Republican primary John McCain emerged the winner, simply because he wasn't George W Bush and Republicans did not want to go down with the sinking George W Bush ship. Keep in mind, that there is not only a Presidential race coming up, but the seats of the House will also be up for grabs. But make no mistake, yes, McCain-Palin won the nomination, but to the real powers that be in the Republican party, they are not their choice.

McCain-Palin are not their choice because they know that McCain will veto every spending bill that is chock full of corporate nepotism. The irony here again is that Bill Clinton got the line item bill through, but never once used it, at least as far as I know. And I always thought that perhaps that bill was just grandstanding and that maybe the Democrats and Republicans had some sort of unwritten agreement that helped push that bill through. At least, I suspect that because George W. Bush never used the line item veto either, at least as far as I know.

But you can bet that John McCain will use that line item veto again and again, until all the madness of pork barrel ceases in Washington DC. John McCain just can't be bought by the special money people who lobby our politicians to do their greedy bidding that damns our people and lines the pockets of the wicked and greedy money mongers. While so much focus has been on the glass ceiling, I'm glad to see that at last their are a few real cracks in the primary. And I'm glad that McCain-Palin are about to put some real cracks in pork barreling at last. And maybe, just maybe, America will stop being a Republic and at least realize it's potential to become a true Democracy that really will be by the people and for the people, and that means all the people.
