Falls Mills, West Virginia Bulltown Campground/ Historical Area

A Place that You Will Not Forget

Amy Witthohn
Growing up I always looked forward to summer time. My family always went camping at Bulltown. I have visited other campsites throughout the years, but this one is the best by far. Falls Mills is a great little town, off the Flatwoods exit. In Flatwoods not only do you have a outlet mall, but there is some interesting history of a "UFOs" that landed there. It is dubbed the home of the "Green-Eyed Monster". And Falls Mills gets its name for the beautiful natural waterfall that is there.

Now to get to Bull Town here are some directions:

If traveling north on Interstate 79:

Exit from Interstate 79 at Flatwoods Exit (Exit 67).

Turn Right at the intersection after exit ramp.

At the traffic light, turn Left on US 19 North.

Travel approximately 10 miles, through the community of Napier and across the Little Kanawha River (Burnsville Lake).

Look for a sign reads Bulltown Campground/Historical Area (Millstone Road) on the left.

If traveling south on Interstate 79:

Exit from Interstate 79 at Roanoke Exit (Exit 91).

Turn Right on US 19 South.

Travel approximately 29 miles through the community of Falls Mill.

Look for a sign that reads Bulltown Campground/Historical Area (Millstone Road) on the right.

This Campground has lots of history and even includes a historical area, at the beginning of the campground. The battle of Bulltown lasted approximately 12 hours. The Confederates were led by Colonel William L. Jackson, and the Union forces were led by Captain Mattingly.

The Historical section-

There are actual homes that were moved board for board and placed in this section before the construction of the Burnsville Lake, There is even a beautiful old church up on the hill.

After turning in to the Bulltown Campsite area on the left is the Historical area. There is a welcome center with artifacts that were found on the ground, and pamphlets with information about Bulltown, you can even schedule tours.

When I went camping a couple years ago one of the park rangers took us on a " Haunted Trail" The homes in the Historical area are rumored to have ghosts, and strange things have happened in the houses. She told us the story of the " Lady in White" I cannot remember the exact names she used, so I will tell it the best I can remember. A man and his new bride were traveling the Weston- Gauley Turnpike ( a section of this is in the bulltown historical area) when attacked by Indians. Both died, and she has been spotted ever since floating down the trail, looking for her lost lover. Many people have witnessed the "Lady in White".

The Campground-

The Bulltown campground has 204 campsites, 196 of these have electrical hookups. There are Restrooms, Shower houses, playgrounds for the children, dump stations, and fresh water fill up stations. A boat ramp and launch are also on the campground. Some of the campsites are wooded lots, with a more rustic feel. Other campsites are water front. You can swim and fish right from your site. The sites on the water were the ones I enjoyed having as a child.

There is also handi-cap access, several trails around the campsite and park. You can get a map from the station at the front gate.

Fishing-

You must have a current WV fishing license. The fish in the lake include large and small mouth bass, rock bass, bluegill, sunfish, walleye, sauger, crappie, channel catfish, long nose gar and carp. Trout are stocked in the Spring.

The Burnsville Lake Marina

This provides docking for boats, Boat Rentals, snack bar and fishing supplies.

Swimming-

You can swim just about anywhere around the lake, but as an added bonus there is a swimming beach, that I loved as a child lots of sandcastles were built there! Swim at own risk though, because no life guards are provided.
