False Image

Melissa R. Mendelson
Secrets are hard to keep
but are very easy to lose
because everybody wants to know
what it is you hide
when you put on an appearance
of someone that you're not
while the real you
is in the corner of your mind
and silently dissolves
into a blocked memory.
Your true colors
fade into the background
as you create someone
that doesn't even describe
the person you really are
as people around you
scratch the surface
to break open the secrets
that lie buried deep within you.
The truth is replaced by lies
as honesty is hidden
behind the curtain
that falls over your secrets
while you're swept away by the crowd.
The time will come,
where you will come crashing down
with your secrets scattered out
while your hands quickly try
to gather them all up
before the truth is revealed
about who you really are,
but the vultures will already begin
to pick and chew each piece
and then shred you apart
for the façade that you have created
and the lies you have told,
leaving you broken and forever shamed.
You can't escape who you are,
no matter how many lies you tell
or transformations you undergo
because you are
who you are with your true colors hanging over
the shadow you hide yourself in,
and your secrets will always break
the mirage you create
to escape the fact
and try to live a lie.
You have to face yourself
and those around you
because the truth will always be
one step ahead and one step behind
while your secrets cling to you
like cobwebs to remind you
that they will always be there
and ready to come apart,
if you choose to be someone else.
You can go on being this way
and allow the predators to rip out
your secrets as soon as you slip
and then become their prey
because they will no longer accept you,
or you can accept yourself
and be who you are
and enjoy life secret free.
