Families Can Still Enjoy Dinner Out at a Restaurant Even with a Tight Food Budget

R. Endter
Even with a tight budget, most families like to enjoy a meal out at a restaurant on occasion. With a little research, you can do that without breaking the bank.

Use coupons! Keep an eye out for restaurant coupons in the newspaper circulars. Many major restaurant chains regularly put coupons out. Though it may only seem like a few dollars, this can add up quickly and may mean the difference between being able to afford another dinner out later in the month. If you live in a major metropolitan area, it might be worth purchasing the Entertainment Book for your area. They offer a large variety of restaurant coupons and discounts. The book is usually about $30 but should pay for itself after a few meals. After clipping the coupons, be sure to carry them with you. Buy an inexpensive coupon file and keep it in your car, stocked with a variety of coupons from different restaurants.

Sign up for restaurant eclubs. Many restaurants will email you a coupon or even a free meal for signing up for their email list on their website. You can also sign up for the Birthday Club at many restaurant websites to receive a free meal on your birthday! Check the websites of your favorite restaurants to see if they offer an email list or eclub to sign up for.

Look for restaurants offering a Kids Eat Free special. Some restaurants will offer a free kid's meal for each adult meal purchased on a specific day each week. This can lead to big savings for a family. Check websites like familyfriendlyamerica.com for a listing of restaurants in almost every state.

When you shop online, go through a program like mypoints.com which gives points for purchases. The points can then be traded in for gift cards, including cards for a variety of restaurants. Even a small gift card will make a meal out more affordable

Reduce your dining out bill by drinking water instead of soda or alcoholic beverages. Water is healthier for you and you will notice the difference on your bill.

Dine out at lunchtime instead of dinner time. Restaurants usually offer a smaller portion for a reduced price.

Ask for a box at the beginning of your meal and take half of it home. Most restaurants serve larger than required portions, so why not get two meals for the price of one?!

Around the holidays, some restaurants offer a bonus gift card or coupon for purchasing one of their gift cards. Purchase the gift card for yourself and use the bonus deal too.
