1. Snake River Canoe Races: On May 7,2011 the next annual Snake River Canoe race will take place. There are a number of different classes in these canoe races, including solo, kayak and open class. There is no age limit in some of these classes so families, especially with pre-teens and teenage children can all enjoy a fun-filled day of canoeing together. This great outdoor activity has entry fees starting at $10.00 and up, depending the class you're in, so even families on low income budgets are able to enjoy a day of fun in the sun without breaking the bank. The race starts at 9:30 A.M. and applications are accepted until 9:00 A.M. on the day of the race, but registering beforehand is highly recommended. 2. Dirt track racing at Ogilvie Raceway: Every Sat. night starting in Apr.the family can enjoy some dirt track racing at the Ogilvie Raceway. Located 2 miles east of Ogilvie off Hwy.23, or about 5 miles west of Mora, excitement galore awaits the family. The 3/8 mile oval track has a number of races each and every Sat. night throughout the season. Prices start at $5.00 for children, and the under six crowd is free. The grandstand has a seating capacity of 1800. Be prepared for evening of thrills and chills when you bring the family out on a Sat. night to enjoy some cheap, fun entertainment. 3. Kanabec History Center Activities: Game night and jam sessions with local musicians are held on the 3rd Sat. of the month when the history center is turned into a cafe' with music, games and refreshments. There is no charge for this fun-filled night, but donations are appreciated. The Kanabec History in conjunction with the Mora Library has a number of Speaker Series's available on Sun. afternoons starting at 3 P.M. The free programs include presentations on The John Beargrass sled dog races, Mn. History from the Ojibwa Immigration in 1650 to today, and a cooking demo entitled "Food Will Win", just to name a few. Bring the family and enjoy these presentations together, and what could be a cheaper activity then "free". For info. check kanabechistory.org
These are just 3 of the activities that are quite inexpensive that families in the Mora area can enjoy together. Some of the other activities that are available in Mora at different times during the year include the Mora Vasaloppet held in Feb., and the Kanabec County Fair held in mid-summer.
