Family Fun on a Budget in San Francisco

Enjoy the Stay with Little to Pay

Lori Gunn
Whether it's a day trip or a longer stay, there is plenty to do in San Francisco for families. Plan activities ahead of time to save money and still have fun. Be sure to have money for the one time moments, though, such as the old-fashioned dress-up pictures available at Pier 39. That is a scene too good to miss. Your family can follow a theme, or everyone can dress in their favorite garb.

Visit the USS Pampanito submarine at Pier 45. The family can walk alongside and admire the design of the sub. A tour package for 2 adults and up to 4 children is $20. Most kids are happy just looking at the outside. Give them each 4 quarters to spend right in front of the submarine at the Musee Mecanique, a mechanical museum whose contents are owned by Edward G. Zelinsky. Admission is free and the quarters will give the kids and adults some fun memories as they try their strength, or look at the different exhibits that will move if they are fed quarters.

Watch for coupons for the Wax Museum at Fisherman's Wharf. Its actual location is at 145 Jefferson St, Ste 500. It is an incredible place to visit. They have the scary, macabre part marked, so parents and kids can decide whether or not to visit that part. I definitely suggest a family make the wax museum a part of their visit, as it allows a friendly introduction to art and talent.

While you are there, look for the McDonald's. It is an inexpensive place to eat in San Francisco, although be prepared to pay more than you do at your hometown McDonald's. If the family likes fish and clam chowder, you are in the right part of San Francisco. You can order at a sit-down restaurant or eat on the hoof around the many stalls along the wharf.

Take the city bus to China Town and enjoy the shops, hustle and bustle of the businesses. Admire the quality of dresses and shirts, or splurge and buy a silk kimono. This is the place to buy postcards to send home.

Enjoy a picnic. Stop by the Presidio of San Francisco, put out a blanket on the lawn, and break out the basket. Bring along a Frisbee or two for the kids to toss, and maybe one for the grownups, too. Enjoy the scenery around the former premier United States Army facility.

If you are planning on spending the night, check with Triple A or AARP, if you are a member, for discounts. Also get one of the quarterly Hotel Guides for specials. Look for any that give free parking with lodging, as that is another premium item in San Francisco that costs quite a bit of money.

Great tips Lori, I live only 26 miles from S.F. and always need to take my guest friends to show this beautiful city. These tips are now great resources for me too, especially when they come with kids!

I'm still sick today, but I figure I can handle copying and pasting comments to get some returned.
