What can a family do for fun on St. Patrick's Day? If you are a Clevelander, a whole heck of a lot. Cleveland has a large Irish population with a long history of St. Patrick's Day celebrations. Since St. Patrick's Day falls on a Monday this year, 2008, the whole weekend will be filled with activities for you and your family.

The biggest event for the celebration of St. Patrick's Day in Cleveland is the annual parade. This years St. Patrick's Day Parade, www.clevelandsirishparade.org, will be the 141st. First established in 1867 by The Ancient Order of Hibernians, www.geocities.com/bolandberry/, Cleveland's Irish Parade has grown in size and stature ever since. The parade starts at E. 24th. And Superior Avenue, making its way to Cleveland's Public Square, ending at Rockwell Avenue. This year's parade promises to be as fun and colorful as past parades. You will see marching bands, bagpipers, leprechauns, drill teams, floats and of course, the ubiquitous smattering of politicians. The parade kicks off at 1:04 PM. Get there early to find a sidewalk venue for viewing. One colorful note about Cleveland's St. Patrick's Day Parade, in 1912, the largest crowd to view the parade gathered to honor native son, Johnny Kilbane, a featherweight boxer who had just won the world title. Playing that night is the raucous band from New York City, Black 47, www.black47.com. Black 47, of New York City, plays full tilt Irish Rock. Loud, exiting and political, this band combines traditional Irish Instruments and songs with rock in the vein of The Clash and Dexys Midnight Runners to put on a great show that will put you in the mood for St. Paddy's day celebrating.     Back in the 70s, I was on the St. Pat's Drill Team, my sisters and I were the ONLY African Americans at that school at the time. Interesting mix of memories of positive and negatives to be sure, but being on that drill team was definitely a highlight of my life. It really was something special!
